Getting ready to move to Thailand and really needed help with my Visa situation. Don’t really know where to start. I’m currently in the states and plan to come June 6 since my lease is up. I won’t have had the 16k in my account for 3 months yet to apply for the dtv visa. Anyone can point me in the direction of an agent who can assist me with the transition to come to Thailand. I would like to be in Bangkok. My income will be my VA monthly payment. To include my retirement from my job.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual seeks guidance for transitioning to Thailand, specifically regarding visa requirements as they prepare to move in June. They currently don't meet the three-month bank statement requirement for a DTV visa, which necessitates showing a minimum balance of 16,000 USD. Various commenters suggest options like applying for the DTV from a neighboring country (e.g., Malaysia), considering an education (ED) visa through a language or cooking school, or exploring the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa for longer stays. Recommendations are made for using an agent, such as the Thai Visa Centre, to simplify the process, and the necessity of complying with Thai banking laws is emphasized.

I think there’s enough Africans living in Thailand as it is. People come here and build your black only restaurants. Black only nightclubs…. This is Asia, if you wanna live in Chicago, stay in Chicago. Please don’t come here and destroy it. Keep all that jive turkey shit back in ur Hometown please 🙏

Having income is not sufficient to apply for a DTV, the DTV is primarily designed for digital nomads but also supports a number of soft power activities. So you first need to decide if you will work remotely from Thailand, if so you show the data to support that and apply using the Workation option. For soft power you sign up for an approved course of a minimum of 6 months duration, preferably longer, and apply using the documentation provided by the course provider

You probably want to come on a tourist eVisa. This you start now. Once you arrive you shop around for the best price for a Non-O visa (retirement). I assume if you are retiring from a job you are 50+.

Before you leave the US get your banking situation worked out (sounds like you already have). Opening some bank account types outside of the US is difficult.

I use google voice for phone service in the US. I have a friend in the US that lets me pair my gvoice to her cell phone.

Tip "Non" means Non immigration. You will see "Non" prefixed to most visa.

Bangkok. Hmm 🤔. There are better places but maybe you’ve been to Thailand before ? We’re currently in Hua Hin. Have a look see. It’s a small seaside community with a friendly community feeling. The Thais are warm and welcoming. The expats , not so much. As you can see from some of the comments here , many are very rude and disgruntled. Avoid them like the plague.

You mentioned your VA . I’ll say this in reference to that part. There’s the Philippines. Reason I mention is it’s got a VA hospital for Americans

You could come to Bangkok then get an Ed visa that is basically a year visa

cost is around ฿30k-฿45k for the course of your choosing

Then you have your own costs associated with the visa which will run ฿30k-฿45k for the year

Look into language schools, cooking schools, Muay Thai schools that support the ed visa

Pro tip….if you go for the ed visa you get a free class before you buy the course so go sit in the class talk to students and ask how the visa works language class is teachers etc for that school…go to at least 3 or more before you decide

This will give you time to save money and travel around Thailand…many people want Bangkok then decide Bangkok isn’t for them

Just fyi: not visa related but VA related sign up for the FMP via the Va website so your medically covered for all your service connected disabilities (0%-100%)…it’s a reimbursement style setup where you go to any hospital or clinic pay upfront keep the receipts submit to the Va and in super fast Va speed you get reimbursed 150-250 days later…you get 2 years from the date of receipt to submit

Curt Harris it’s worth it

Some Bangkok hospitals will direct bill the VA, others won’t, some will if it’s over a certain dollar rate…so bring your FMP letter to Bangkok hospital and inquire

But you can use the FMP at any clinic, medical massage facility, hospital for all your service related disabilities (0%-100%)

If you go for private insurance and you’re covered for a chronic condition (HBP) you can omit that condition from the policy to get it cheaper per year…the VA will cover it while the private insurance will cover everything else

An LTR visa may also be an option to consider if you qualify. It’s a much lengthier process but it’s better in the long term since it’s valid for 10 years and you renew at the 5 year mark.

Jasmine Queen unlikely to have one she qualifies for. Remote worker is super super tough. If you don’t have 16,000 you likely don’t make the criteria for wealthy world citizen which requires an investment of 500,000 usd in Thailand and 1 million usd in assets. Wealthy pensioner is a bit easier but need to make 40,000 passive income plus 250,000 investment in Thailand or 80,000 passive income (all usd) AND be over 50. There is a 4 category but that requires a job in Thailand in specific fields

You have to be outside of thailand to apply for the DTV. Do you have the 16k in the bank account now? If you come to Thailand on a tourist visa, you can travel to a neighboring country (e.g., Vietnam) for a month or so and apply for your DTV there. You will likely need to apply for a DTV soft power like a cooking class since you're not working.

DTV visas are dependent upon application outside of Thailand. Meeting up with an agent in Bangkok and working on your visa there is not possible. Malaysia may be your best option for applying outside of Thailand. I've heard there is a quick turnaround in the application process. Good luck. 🙏🇹🇭🙏
