Hi everyone I am just looking for advice and doing some research on moving to thailand. As a 29 year old, how could i move to thailand? I understand i would maybe have to arrive on a tourist visa and then extend after establishing a bank account and having proof of income, but i would like to hear more opinions from others. I also was looking to apply for a 90 day visa and attend a language school but i dont know much about thai language schools. Any advice for a permanently disabled veteran? I WILL be reading every comment and might not reply to most but i appreciate any opinion or wisdom. Should i rent a place in thailand to move to on my 60-90 day visit before arriving and extend by using that rental agreement or is it more complicated than that? In reality I would like to become a permanent resident and spent the rest of my days there.
Answer summary
The user, a 29-year-old disabled veteran, is exploring options for moving to Thailand. They inquire about visa types, particularly whether to start with a tourist visa and then extend it or pursue a student visa for learning Thai. Community responses highlight the challenges of opening a bank account without specific visas, with suggestions including the education visa, tourist visa, or teaching English as a potential pathway. Residents stress the importance of understanding visa requirements and living conditions in Thailand, while also hinting at the difficulties younger individuals may face with limited options for long-term residency.

You need to scroll down and read other posts to get an idea of what’s available. Obviously you haven’t otherwise you would know that you can’t open a bank account in Thailand as a tourist and your to young for a retirement visa

Take your time look around

when looking to rent

You can not do any banking on a TR Visa and you don’t need a bank yet

if this is your first time here

Come look around for the kind of life style you want

26 years l lived here

Just take your time and verify everything twice when doing anything here

Have you been here for a long time in the past already? If not then come on a Tourist Visa or Visa Excempt first. Currently 60+30 Days on either of them. Very easy. This will give you a better feel for the place. It's different when you stay for a long time. If you still want to be here full time then you already have some good inputs from others.

Who knows, you might enjoy doing 6 Months in each Country. That is absolutely doable for you.

Since you are holding a US Passport you can literally buy a Ticket today, register your arrival Online and travel tomorrow.

So if you have the funds, sit down, plan your arrival in Bangkok, book an inexpensive Hotel for at least a few days and enjoy.

Once here decide where in Thailand you want to start your Adventure and rent a Condo there for a Month.

Again, Thailand is not for everyone. So do come Visa Exempt for 60+30 Days or better with a Tourist Visa... Then Travel to a Neighbouring Country for a week or two before you return again for 60+30 Days.

Your going to have a hard time at that age unless youre wealthy and can buy a Privilege Visa. Just up and deciding to move to Thailand isnt that easy.

What would you need for the Philippines? Why is it easier there?

The easiest way is probably a student visa. You could study Thai or Muay Thai. Lots of places offer that service for people looking for long-term visa solutions. Also know that if you go for the initial period, you can't change your visa while remaining in the country you will have to leave at least temporarily. That part isn't too hard.

*** Your best bet is: stay where you are and come to Thailand for 6 months during the wintertime (October thru March) on a multi entry Tourist Visa. It has easy to fulfill requirements and can be used for a 6-months holiday every year

*** you cannot get a bank account opened on a tourist visa

*** for a Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa you need to be 50 years old

*** for a Non-Imm-O Family Visa you need to be married to a Thai wife and have 400,000 THB in your Thai bank account

*** on a Non-Imm-ED Visa (studying Thai language) you can get a maximum of 3 years out of it, and Immigration will check that you have been attending school every day and test your language skills

*** on a LTR Visa you need a passive income of at least $80,000 USD per year and you need a mandatory health insurance

*** You can check if you are elegible for the DTV, as it can get issued on various reasons. On a DTV you need a minimum of 500,000 THB in your home bank account. You cannot get a Thai bank account opened on a DTV

*** you can buy the ELITE PRIVILEGE Visa. It can be bought for 5 years, for 10 years and for 15 years or 20 years (only on invitation). The price starts at 900,000 THB for 5 years, and it is 5 million Baht for 20 years

Your options are very very limited depending on how much money you have. You need to check the Thai Embassy website to see what the different visa requirements.

You are too young for the retirement visa, so you would need to:

-have a child

-or wife.

-You could also get the DTV, which needs proof of various sorts, along with leaving the country at least 2 times a year.

-Thai elite visa (expensive)

-The long term visa for people with a lot of investable money (the name escapes me right now)

Type of Visa you possess determines whether you can open a bank account. They don’t play games in this department…watch some You Tube videos, look up long term visa in Thailand…ton of info…here you get the benefit of some experience and a ton of opinions….

Do you have 50k USD to pay for an elite visa? That only gives you 10 years. There’s also the LTR visa but only if you have a highly qualified skill or lots of money to invest in a company. You can’t become a permanent resident, even retire visa needs to be renewed every year. Having a long term rental will not get you a longer visa extension, and without a long term visa it’s almost impossible to open a Thai bank account…

Impossible for you to open bank account here unless you have an Elite visa

At your age your options are limited. Getting a job in Thailand is not easy but if you don't need to work the Thai Privilege visa might be your best option

Sean Flores If you think moving to Thailand is going to solve all your problems and your life will be perfect, think again. I highly suggest you work on your life where you are. You cant run from your problems or insecurities.

what is this visa, and no i do not need to work and thank you! i understand my options are limited but what if i was to get basic medical care with a hospital there?
John **********
John **********
@Sean *******
I don't know about basic medical care, but if you are able to obtain a treatment plan detailing over 6 months of treatment from a recognised medical professional at a legitimate medical facility in Thailand you could look at applying for a DTV
