I am currently in the U.S. Going forward I plan to spend less than 180 days in Thailand in any calendar year given the new issue of potential double-taxation of funds moved into Thailand, plus the recent issues with Thai bank accounts being frozen for no good reason. Because of this I want to keep the smallest amount of money in my Thai bank account as possible. I would also like to avoid the yearly non-imm O extension process (in the past I've used a non-imm O visa based on marriage to a Thai, followed by annual extensions). I'm thinking that going back to a non-imm O-A or O-X would fit the bill. I know that those visas require Thai health insurance, but after six years of dealing with annual extensions and banked money I'm ready to just pay the price for health insurance (assuming I can get it for a "reasonable" cost at age 75). For the next several years I will be doing this ~6 months in Thailand, ~6 months out. Unless things have changed since 2017, I think an O-A or O-X visa would enable me to travel to Thailand without having to keep any money in a Thai bank account. Plus entering/leaving Thailand every ~6 months would enable me to get two years in Thailand on an O-A as long as I re-enter before the anniversary date of the first entry. O-X would enable 6 years with careful planning. Have I got this mostly right?
Answer summary
The user is considering switching from an annual Non-Imm O visa extension based on marriage to either a Non-Imm O-A or O-X visa due to concerns about banking issues and double taxation. They plan to spend six months in Thailand each year and avoid maintaining a large amount in a Thai bank account. The comments indicate mixed opinions, with some suggesting that the user is overcomplicating their plans and that a multi-entry tourist visa may suffice for their needs.

Your whole plan seems unnecessary. If you are going to only spend 6 months in Thailand in a calendar year just get a multi entry tourist visa.

At 75 it’ll be pricy and good chance wound cover much your OA after it’s expired you’ll be doing the same extension as now with the same funds required but you’ll still be paying for insurance

Spend as much or little time in Thailand. You won't get double taxed dure to a Double tax'agreement from the US

Actually a very BAD plan. Why don't just stick to your one-year extension of stay based on retirement, avoiding the mandatory Thai private health insurance you need if you get a 1-year extension based out of a Non-Imm-O/A visa? The extension based on a Non-O leaves you with a free choice of health insurance. Myself I have been spending the recent 18 years on an EoS based on retirement with 800,000 THB deposit in my SCB account and NO health insurance because I can self-insure myself (the 800,000 THB are a perfect emergency fund, just in case)

Why is it a BAD plan?

The plan is perfectly fine, there's just a extra health insurance cost added to it, which they seem fine with.

because after the second year, you need 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account and a mandatory almost useless Thai private health insurance. You can avoid this if you start on a Non-Imm-O visa and keep your free choice of an insurance or no insurance

seems complete overkill as the OP is only spending six months in Thailand.

As a added note, when you apply for the Non-OA, you can use a non-Thai insurance, provided it fulfills a set of requirements.

So you can get yourself a solid insurance, and simply get a new Non-OA every 2 years instead of extending in Thailand.

You can apparently even self-insure if you get denied by insurance companies, provided you have enough money saved up.

But extending in Thailand does as far as I know, require a Thai-based insurance.

They seem to want to go home every year, so might as well go the Non-OA route.

Well, kind of, but not really.

You can get 2 years out of the Non-OA without actually extending it, as long as you have a valid health insurance. Just need to do a quick re-entry before the visa validity runs out and they will still stamp you in for a year if your health insurance lasts that long.

They don't want to put their money in a Thai bank account. With the Non-OA they don't have to, and will still get 2 years out of it of timed well.

You got it right except the Non-OX requires you to have 3 million in a Thai bank account ;)

Yes overall a workable good plan. Many people get the OA Visa every year or two years... keeping their 💲💲💲 in their home country invested or earning interest.
