What are the best visa options for a year-long stay in Thailand for a couple, one over 50 and the other under?

Hi all,

First of all: thanks everyone for this group and for the useful advice given by many of you.

Next year (2018) my spouse and I would like to spend the entire year in Thailand; perhaps we will spend a couple of months during that year in another country in Asia.

We have no intention of working in Thailand (we can afford just to "be" there for a year), I am 52 by that time, my spouse is under 50. We are married but both non-Thai. We intend to buy a return ticket from The Netherlands (where we live) to Bangkok departure early January 2018, return late December/early January 2019.

In my current thinking I guess it would be best if we try to get an ME tourist visa for 6 months, then after that period do visa runs or apply for 2-month extensions a number of times.

Questions:

1) Would the airline except this given the fact that, on departure, we would only have a 6-month visa but stay for a year?

2) Do you think the visa schedule I propose is doable/the most appropriate one in this case?

Thanks for your help in this,

Nico

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the best visa options for an expat couple planning to stay in Thailand for the entire year of 2018. The couple is considering a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) for up to 270 days and potential extensions or visa runs thereafter. Comments suggest that the over-50 partner is eligible for a Non-Immigrant Type O-A Visa, which would allow for a longer stay without needing frequent visa runs, while advice on applying for a tourist visa in nearby countries is also provided. The conversation emphasizes the importance of having a return ticket and sufficient funds in the bank for visa applications.

Good suggestion for the O/P

Unfortunately only a person over 50 could qualify for the year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) )visa :/

His wife could apply at the same time for a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type O visa as the spouse of someone on an O-A visa and then she could apply for a yearly extension which matches her husbands admitted until stamp at the immigration office for 1900baht. After that if she's going to exit/re-enter the country she'd hafta buy a re-entry permit.

OR she could check and see if the consulate will sell her an year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O visa (which would mean every 90 days she'd need to border bounce <-go to the border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country, then back into thailand to get a 90 day stamp.

The Dutch embassy and consulate will not issue any multiple entry visas except METV.

What about getting an O-A for yourself. You are over 50 so should qualify. I believe your wife can be under 50 if she applies with you at your countries embassy. Check your countries Thai embassy Web site. This will give you a 1 year ME. No need to do any border runs. Come and go as you like.

I will look into that because that would be ideal!

and for a METV you have tomhave so much in your bank account ! not sure how much !?
Robert *******
The money mentioned and no less must be in the bank from 6 months before til application date. For an Extension of Stay there is not question or proof of money.

@Robert ******
many thanks also I heard that it had to be in the bank a few months before the application and stay in the bank for the duration of your stay in Thailand , which if true raises the question : do you have to show your bank balance on each extension?

โ‚ฌ 5.500 for single or double for Family.

METV is good option, as said you can get 270 days out of it. But be aware on entry you get 60 days admitted to stay. Than or a border run for another 60 days or an Extension of Stay at local Immigration at 1900 Thb.

Hi Nico, I'm doing exactly this. I'm 2 months into my METV, so watch this space!

Only thing to note is that to get an METV (in the UK anyway) you need a return ticket within the 6 months. We picked the cheapest one way ticket to a neighbouring country exiting just before the 6 months (remember it's from ISSUE not when you enter the kingdom). Whether I choose to use it or not...๐Ÿ˜‰

I'll update the group through my progress as it might just be useful!

Oh BTW we are leaving to Thailand today for a month (also in order to prepare for the one year stay), we will be in Chiang Mai 10-14 June to visit some possibilities for long term stay. Maybe you have some suggestions for that as well. I will PM you.

Do shout if you have any more questions, happy to help! ๐Ÿ˜„

Great, exactly the sort of thing we have in mind :) Enjoy...

Yes, exactly that. We are just about to finish 2 months in Phuket (fitness stuff), then off to Chiang Mai next week for a couple of months at least ๐Ÿ˜„.

Thanks Charlotte! Are you travelling around in Thailand? We intend to stay 2-3 months in one place, then move on the next, etc.

To get to the full year, you are looking at one Single entry tourist visa, that would bring you up to 359 days with extension. Get the visa in Vientiane.

That is a good tip, thank you

1) yes you have a stamped visa in your passport, so ticket out will not be needed. 2) yes get an METV, at least it will give you close to 270 days in country, you still need to do a border run either once every 60 days, or once every 90 days depending on if you extend or not. Just make sure you make the last entry on the METV just before the use before date, that way you maximize the visa to 269 days
