TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the experiences of expatriates using UOB and other banks in Thailand. There are mixed opinions about UOB, with some users expressing satisfaction with customer service and convenient account management, while others report challenges and frustrations. Users also mention that all Thai banks issue official statements for immigration purposes and compare the efficiency of different banks, including Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank. Additionally, there is concern about reliance on AI-generated information and the availability of certain banking services, especially regarding international transfers.

UOB took over my account from CitiBank and since then it has been nothing but grief.

The staff are great, most helpful but the are kneecapped by the obsessive systems imposed by Singapore. Those staff taken over from CitiBank agree!

Every time I login to online banking there is a notice of impending shutdown of one system or another for maintenance. In my opinion Bangkok Bank are a better option.

I have a friend from Hong Kong with UOB for 20 years and they say the same. I suppose I just got used to Citi after 25 years! Best bank I have ever been with.

Kasikorn bank gave me the document I needed for IO... 3 hundred baht... had to deposit one hundred baht to ensure update was current..

UOB has been a nightmare for many foreigners in Thailand lately. All banks issue statements for immigration purpose, they are obligated to do so.
Jo **********
@Tommy ******
stop lying they have done everything for me. much more service oriented than Thai banks
Tommy *******
@Jo *********
I really don't give a single fuck about your personal experience.

@Tommy ******
oh baby throw temper tantrums
Tommy *******
I won't go into specifics, but just go on Twitter/X and look for UOB and Thailand, you'll find a lot of pissed off customers. Pure nightmare fuel.
Tommy *******
I have no business with them, but based on what I have read in the past 2-3 years, I'd not even touch them with a 10 foot pole. My two cents.

Bangkok Bank still issues letters for retirees. I got one about ten days ago. Plus the annual statements you can now order through the app, and they are emailed to you the next day which saves going into the bank branch. Very convenient
Martin **********
@Keith ******
For monthly methods, this is not enough. For Jomtien, needed also a bankletter certification. It was provided by BKK bank, but had to come back.
Keith *******
@Martin *********
Yes. Bank letter and 12 months statement. The OP said Bangkok Bank wasn't giving letters, I pointed out they were
Martin **********
@Keith ******
Yes. But I not had best experience with the bank lately. They refused to give the bank letter, too busy, come back tomorrow, when I was all set to go to immigration. A few weeks before, I had to go to the bank to do a transfer on someone else's Thai Bank account. It was 2.30 pm, waited one hour and a half. When my turn, they refused to do the transfer. Reason? I should have asked before 11 am. Not see why. I not asked for cash, so just had to put all in their computer. Yesterday got a message in my bank app, to agree on all new terms. Strange.

@Martin *********
My branch is very quiet and whenever I go I take chocolates. They remember me the next time!
Uwe *********
They don’t except Transfers from Europe Via WISE!!

I've been using UOB for donkeys.. always happy with them
John **********
I really wish people would stop posting AI output on here, often inaccurate and downright misleading
Garrett ***********
Not sure what the point is here. All thai banks issue 12 month statements.
Phil ******
@Garrett **********
some like Bangkok bank freezes your funds for 4 months
*****************************************************************************************************************************
Nongnuch ********
the best is, never touch the 800,000 THB in your account. If your buddy did follow this simple rule, Bangkok Bank won't have any problem issuing the bank letter for Immigration confirming the 2-months seasoning of a minimum of 800,000 THB
Phil ******
@Nongnuch *******
this is his operating account where only comes in and goes out. He never falls below ฿800k. This is his 2nd extension so the bank can see his history over 2.5 years. The bank says its immigration rule but the II says its not. That's why I'm trying to help him.
Garrett ***********
@Phil *****
What does that have to do with what he posted or what I said>?
Phil ******
@Garrett **********
he's talking about bank letters for immigration purposes
Andy ************
@Phil *****
Not if you use the 65k transfer method. It's only 400k which is frozen, and to meet extension criteria you must have this minimum in your account throughout the year anyway. I can't see the problem
Phil ******
@Andy ***********
yes but my friend on a retirement extension has had ฿800k frozen with Bangkok bank so you go figure.
Andy ************
@Phil *****
I think he's not telling the truth. It's only 400k which is frozen
Phil ******
@Andy ***********
mate im helping him at the moment as he can't get any sense from the branch in Petchabun which is a 4-hour round trip from Chon Daeng where he lives. I've got a manager in Head office calling me back. He did ask from a statement to renew his retirement extension. Yep sounds fantasy but its happenned to him. Now here's something a lawyer posted s few days ago.
************************************************
Andy ************
@Phil *****
It's designed to stop the agents using the banks to obtain their dodgy extensions. The bank knows many will withdraw the money immediately the extension has been issued. If immigration are saying "nothing to do with us" it's probably time for immigration to call "last orders" on these dodgy retirement extensions
Phil ******
@Andy ***********
they can see his history. Its his bloody money and yes the bank lady said its immigration but when he went there and talked to the IO that he's known ever since he got the retirement visa and extension she said this isn't immigration policy.
Nongnuch ********
@Phil *****
correct, it is not a new Immigration rule. It is something the Bangkok Bank came up with, a week or so ago

Jo **********
UOB is amazing because it’s Singapore and they are opened minded to opening an account yet strict.
