What are the current visa extension rules for tourists and non-immigrant visa holders in Phuket?

The latest from Phuket-

"On Friday, Phuket Immigration confirmed to *The Phuket News* that by order from Bangkok all tourists can extend their stay by simply presenting themselves at the Immigration office, filing an application and paying B1,900.

However, all foreigners staying on any other kind of visa, which includes Non-Immigrant O visas issued to foreigners married to a Thai and supporting a Thai family as well as Business visas, must obtain a letter from their respective embassy in order to be granted an extension to stay."

Note this is not talking about yearly non-immigrant extensions, where you need to meet financial requirements. If you meet them everything proceeds as normal. This is about people with multiple entry non-immigrant visa that need to leave and return to Thailand every 90 days. I believe this is very common in many parts of the south, you have many people who have been here for years on these visas.

EDIT: the first paragraph here is most likely incorrect. It appears Phuket Immigration is NOT doing second extensions on tourist visas without the embassy letter. However more countries, including the US will now issue a personalized letter.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recently, Phuket Immigration announced that tourists can extend their stay by submitting an application and paying a fee of B1,900. However, for those on Non-Immigrant O visas or other types of visas, a letter from their respective embassy is required to secure an extension. There has been some confusion regarding these regulations, with several reports stating that tourists applying for a second extension have been denied without the required letter, despite initial claims by immigration officials. Experiences shared in the comments suggest variability in how strictly these rules are enforced.

All these wanna-be experts are very tiresome and misleading .....

Went to CM this afternoon around 4pm. That letter is ZERO USE. Many people have came with it and it has no value. However, the front of service big man was asking everyone where they are from and if they had a letter from their embassy. If your embassy won't issue you one, go speak to the people at the desk, they might say it's possible anyway. I've been told to go back tomorrow (because I arrived after 3:30pm) with the forms that I filled in there and should get the 30 day extension with no letter from the embassy. Just explain a legitimate reason and they may bend the rules a bit for you and tell you exactly what you need to come back with to get it. They seem to be doing their best to help us out

I guess it's just a case of presenting yourself and hoping that whoever is dealing with it has a heart! But worth just going down and talking to them

Yes, second extension, already extend 30 days

Is this a second extension? You are on a tourist entry and already got one extension?

Lots of humans in a tight space while a pandemic is on, what a great idea !!

From the article:

"On Friday, Phuket Immigration confirmed to The Phuket News that by order from Bangkok all tourists can extend their stay by simply presenting themselves at the Immigration office, filing an application and paying B1,900."

So someone with a TOURIST visa CAN extend without the elusive letters for a consulate or embassy. Yes?
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
Correct, it's inaccurate in that regard. That's what the immigration memo says, that's apparently what immigration told the paper but it is not what they are actually doing. They want the letter, and it has to be a physical original, no emails or printed pdfs

NO
Steven ***************
So this is false? ( read paragraph 3)
Steven ***************
Sounds about right. Could be just a memo or poor translation. Seeing how the wording of #3 cancels out everything mentioned above, it wouldn't surprise me. Especially knowing how obscure thai law can be in interpretation , add to that the famous discretion when applying them
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I believe it is an English translation of an immigration memo that did exist. There is a Thai version out there as well. It was passed around various agents and lawyers. Whether it was the final draft or what they agreed on to implement who knows.
Steven ***************
So
@Maxim **********
. My original question still stands. Is it false? Seeing you posted it originally and are now saying it doesnt apply , I will let you decide.
Maxim ***********
Having said that, I will go to Khon Kaen immigration tomorrow with every god damn piece of paper I can think of. My Thai GF with me. I am ready to stand my ground.
Maxim ***********
Do u think I didnt read? I am the one that created the thread and pointed to point 3 in my original post.

I am just telling u again that inmigration in BKK, Phuket, CM, Pattaya, dont care. Everyone brought that letter today and got denied. Some had that letter + general letter from their embassy and still got denied.

It may change tomorrow, but as of today the only people who got 2nd extension has letter with their name on it.
Steven ***************
Maxim. Read the first 3 words of #3 again. " if any foreigner" it virtually discounts your country of origin. People should take the thai copy of this to immigration and show them if they are being denied.
Maxim ***********
I have no idea what that Affidavit will look like. Chiang Mai is a long trip from here.
Maxim ***********
From Canadian consulate:

"Dear sir,

Thank you for contacting the Consulate of Canada in Chiang Mai.

The Government of Canada has issued a Global Travel Advisory advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice.

Issuing a letter to allow you to stay in the country is not one of the service we provide. What we can provide is a general affidavit where you need to complete it in person at the Embassy in Bangkok or Consulate in Chiang Mai.

The service is free of charge. You will need to bring your passport with you when you come to apply. The Embassy and Consulate cannot guarantee if the affidavit will be accepted. It is up to Thai Immigration whether they will consider accepting the issued general affidavit or not."
Maxim ***********
"At this time countries whose consulates DO issue the "unable to travel due to Covid-19" embassy letter are

Spain, Italy, China, South Korea, Sweden, Morocco, Austria, Turkey, Finland, Poland, Brazil, Ireland, Ukraine, Malaysia, Uruguay, Chile, Belgium, Philippines.USA , UK."
Maxim ***********
@Steven **************
Apparently 20 countries are giving proper letter including USA and UK. Many people from USA got denied today with generic letter, like the one above, USA embassy was quick to rectify and now they will do personalized letter.
Steven ***************
Ivan . That's the issue with different rules for different branches.. total idiocy.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
That does seem to be what it says. But it does not seem to be being implemented like that yet anywhere.
Steven ***************
Maxim. Read #3. If you dont meet #1 or #2 , which mentions embassy letter, they can still issue 30 day exts.
Maxim ***********
@Steven **************
This one dont work even if ur country is on the list. U need letter with ur name on it.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I saw another version of this that was slightly different. I think like many things it can depend on the specifics of the local interpretation and implementation.
Maxim ***********
This article is for 1st extension, for 2nd they ask letter from ur embassy. People on tourist visa got denied 2nd extension today.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
The issue is how you read the memo, if the first paragraph is referring just to the regular extension.
David **********
So even before the coronavirus it is possible to receive an extension on a tourist visa. So now because of the coronavirus they will grant tourist one extension which they could have gotten anyway??

So, ...
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
She confirmed it was a second extension on a tourist visa.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
She did also say that Phuket would take it without the name, but required it to be an original from the embassy.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I saw that post. I've asked what visa she was trying to extend, she didn't specify.
Maxim ***********
I will read thai visa forum now to see if there more updates.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
In Phuket specifically? This is about Phuket, not anywhere else.
Chester ********
Alas some first hand reports on this page today said they were denied!?!
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
She confirmed it was a second extension on a tourist visa.
Ivan ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I saw that. Not clear what sort of visa she was trying to extend though. If it was a non immigrant that would gel with the article.
