Our good new friend and Chang Mai Immigration Volunteer Mike Gaudet is trying hard to explain about the office there.

Mike Here you go:

After volunteering at Chiang Mai immigration by the airport for the past two weeks and heading back in on Monday, I need to put this out. I also attached two docs outlining entry and stay requirements as of this past Friday. It may not apply to you, but please pass along to those you know...

Reminder to everyone experiencing visa issues inside Thailand (Chiang Mai):

In Chiang Mai, visa extensions for 30-day tourist visas are done at PROMENADA MALL, in the old TM-30 office location. 1900 THB. Hours are 8:30-4:30, but queue runs out around 2:30. That may change, but that was as of Friday. PS - They also do 90-day reporting there and ONLY there. Do not go to the airport location to do TM-47 (90-day reporting) paperwork.

After your first extension, without a Consulate letter, you can get a 7-day extension at Promenada location for 1900 THB (as of Friday. See attached doc, though). Again, this may change, and if so, I’ll update accordingly once I verify on Monday.

If your country issues letters from the consulate/embassy requesting the Kingdom to extend you due to COVID-19, come to the immigration office by the airport. Bring 2 copies of passport, TM-6 departure card, and current visa stamp (only VOA or tourist visas), and 2 photos for the TM-7 applications. Still costs 1900 THB as of now. Countries that I know do NOT issue consul

Letters as of Friday: USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany. That may change by tomorrow. Call your embassy and ask.

For long-stay visa issues, come to the airport location and bring your passport, a blue pen, and all your visa-supporting paperwork. Extensions can be done in-country, but require all supporting docs. As of Friday. Consulate letters are not required for long-stay visa extensions.

ALL Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Malaysian citizens requiring visa extensions come to airport location. 2nd extension requests require a consul letter (original, not a copy). Initial requests are processed right outside the Laos, Burma visa service office at the airport location.

The situation is changing. The rules are changing. Please be patient and understanding when you swing by. I’ll be there to assist and answer questions at the airport location. If I can’t answer, I’ll find out. I won’t answer conjecture or opinion because all I know is what’s in place, not what WILL happen unless the officers let me know to release to the public. But I’m more than happy to ask and see if I can find out.

It’s a mad, mad world we’re in, but we’re in it together. This too shall end, but we need to navigate through it, first.

Good luck, everyone. I think I covered the bulk. If you have questions, let me know. If you swing by immigration tomorrow, I’ll see you there

TLDR : Answer Summary
Mike Gaudet, a volunteer at Chiang Mai Immigration, provides updated information regarding visa extensions and reporting procedures. Extensions for 30-day tourist visas are handled at PROMENADA MALL, costing 1900 THB, with specific hours and processes for different visa types. He emphasizes the need for proper documentation based on nationality and visa type, particularly noting variations for long-stay and other visa categories. The situation is fluid, and he encourages patience and communication with local immigration officials.

I've been last week in Samui Imm for a year visa. The room was overcrowded. They were many people for 90-days report. Isn't it time to make the 90-day report on line?

This may seem an odd question, but if or when I am in the situation where I need to obtain a consular/embassy letter, I am not sure where I would go. I am a Candian citizen (i.e., travelling with a Canadian passport) but am a permanent resident of Spain. Therefore, would I seek assistance with the Canadian or Spanish consulate?
Tod *********
Linda Marlow Pay attention, IF you are stamped IN to thailand on a Canadian passport you are canadian in the eyes of the thais AND in the eyes of your consulate, don't care where you think you call home,

At this time the Candadian consulate is NOT offering the letter for the emergency extension.

If you are retired the Thai economy not being good if anything will only make things cheaper for you. And from the Thai point of view, if the economy does crash, which is likely, the more people here to support it the better.

Spain is locked down a lot harder than Thailand is, you cannot go out other than for essential supplies, you cannot ride a bike. It's also right now in a much worse state from this, second largest increase in deaths daily at the moment (after Italy). I would not want to go back to Spain right now, you are better off here if you can stay.

It's not just about inconvenience either, if you are older travelling back to Spain right now could be a death sentence. If at all possible, stay where you are, and minimize social contact.

@Benjamin *****
Why do you suggest making a plan to leave Thailand now? Or why have you highly recommended this now?
Linda ********
@Benjamin *****
I would not intend on returning to Canada as my home is in Spain.

This is interesting. I'd be interested to see if the situation is similar in Udon. Will be dropping by both the airport and immigration in Udon to check out the situation tomorrow with regards to holders of these passports - previous trip to immigration they just mentioned to exit the country and come back in to the country to myself (Malaysian passport holder) and someone else (a Hong Kong passport holder).

Also, I assume based on the wording that the first extension doesn't require the consul letter (hopefully).
Darryl *********
Called the Malaysian Embassy in the morning - They're now issuing letters, but the request must be made in person at the embassy in Bangkok during the "new" opening hours between 8:30AM and 12:00PM. At this point, was considering doing a day trip to Bangkok just for this.

Went to Udon Thani immigration anyway just to try my luck. Place was absolutely packed. But I managed to get a one month extension WITHOUT a letter from the embassy. I believe for certain countries (quoted above), there may have been some internal memos circulated that made the difference between this visit to immigration and the previous one.

Good luck to everyone.

Thanks Robert/ Mike & Ben so much 🙏

To clarify:

For NON B Holders who can not or are not getting any reply / assistance from their embassy:

Is the advise to class ourselves as section #3 from letter above.

Go to our local immigration with all non B document proof and hope they extend for us?

🙏🙏🙏

you need to apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay as usual.

This letter is for people with a Tourist stamp as in the 30 day Visa Exempt Entry or Tourist Visa.

Is this applicable for tourists and foreign workers staying in Chiang Mai?

@Benjamin *****
what I know is it will expire at the end of March. They just sent me a message right now saying "No,This is enough. thanks". Well, I guess I'm done here. 🤷🤷🤷🤷
Deb *****
@Benjamin *****
Their country was lockdown 2 weeks ago. They went to the labour office last Friday by the way(🤦). I forgot, the other option the immigration told them is to recontract with their school for them to have their visas extended. And once they're okay to fly back to their home country then the school can cancel their visas and WP. No idea if it can possibly work.
Deb *****
@Benjamin *****
I'll ask them if they will allow me. Also, can you confirm this document? I saw it on a comment section in a news article.
Deb *****
The next departing flight back to their home is after their visas expire and can only get 7 days visa extension. They already contacted the embassy but they can't help at all. The labour said that if they're going to cancel their work permit now and the employee will go for a visa application to another country ASAP, they will have a hard time coming back (no idea).

The air travel you've mentioned is what I'm trying to explain to my friends. I've sent all the possible options and advices you posted in here but it seems like they are too afraid to get infected and they have lost all hope.
Deb *****
Benjamin Hays I mean foreign teachers who are about to leave Thailand for good. They're suppose to fly before their visas expire but due to unforeseen events, their flight got cancelled and rescheduled. Another problem they're facing soon is overstaying. The labour office doesn't want to cancel their work permits so that they can bounce in and out to any border that is open ASAP.

I have all my paperwork for my ED Visa, can this be done in-country at immigration? Thanks
Wayne ***************
I got all my paperwork from my school on Friday and they have no plan as of yet what to do or where we need to go. Good luck Matt.

I was wondering the same question. Considering we can’t leave now to go and change everything over and return. I’m headed to immigration on Tuesday I’m going to ask when there.

And how did you get all your paperwork but nobody told you what to do with it?
Robert *********
Robert, I have a multiple entry Non Immigrant O Visa, and required to leave Thailand every 90 days and re-enter. My current visa expires March 30.

I have a residence in Chiang Mai and currently visiting Koh Phangan, Thailand.

Do I have to leave Thailand? Many neighboring countries closed their boarders

Do you have advise on how to get my visa renewed. Preferably for 90 days
