Any recent successful applicants from the UK via the Muay Thai soft power route?

If so, which gym did you use, how long was your course, and what documents did you provide?

I’m trying to understand what currently makes a strong application, especially with the recent tightening of rules.

Any genuine recent experiences would really help. Thanks.
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the current state of DTV visa applications for UK expats looking to train in Muay Thai in Thailand. Recent experiences from successful applicants highlight the importance of enrolling in a 9-month course at a registered gym, as shorter courses may no longer be accepted. Users shared varying opinions on visa costs, gym selection, and potential risks of being granted a DTV visa, given the tightening regulations. The discussion emphasizes the necessity of providing legitimate financial documents and understanding the implications of visa types, with many agreeing that opting for a longer course is safer against application rejections.

Looking at the thick end of one thousand pounds for a nine month course now recommend and embassy fee with the possibility of non refundable rejection tread carefully applying for a DTV.

Anonymous participant 631 Where are you finding figures like £1,000 for a 9-month course from? Because everything I’ve been looking at has been WAY higher than that.

Genuinely interested, because I’d pay £1,000 for a 9-month course in a heartbeat. To me that actually sounds very reasonable compared to some of the prices I’ve been seeing.

Cheaper & more flexible to USE METV

I personally don’t see the benefit of the METV.

You pay the visa fee, then pay the 1,900 THB extension fee, and then still have to leave Thailand every 90 days, with the additional expenses of leaving and re-entering the country on top of that. With all them extra costs, the METV doesn’t really seem cheaper than the DTV over time.

Plus, that is literally what I just did visa-free — 60 days plus a 30-day extension. So what benefits do you really get from the METV?

I am aware that the 60-day visa-free has now been changed back to 30 days, but still, the METV seems extremely inconvenient.

For someone wanting to train consistently, the METV just wouldn’t work for me. That’s why the DTV appeals to me more.

With course lengths now set to go to 9-12 months plus the visa fee & the fact lots of people still had to bo a border run with DTV as immigration made it so difficult to extend DTV, METV would still be cheaper unless you went past 12 months.

Not to mention a lot of the gyms doing dtv are tourist gyms & signing up to 12 months membership at a gym you’ve never trained at risky.

I think to pay up to £1000 for a visa & course when you might not even be in Thailand for a year is crazy expensive, Ye METV is more messing around but for the extra £££ saved for training & expenses it would be worth it

I get what you’re saying to be fair, especially regarding tourist gyms and the risk of signing up to a course at a gym where you’ve never even trained. That part I completely agree with.

At the same time though, I still think there’s a big difference between having to leave every 90 days on an METV compared to every 180 days on a DTV. Even if people end up doing a border run instead of extending the DTV, it’s still double the amount of time in Thailand before needing to leave, which for someone wanting to train consistently makes a big difference.

I’m also confused where the “£1,000 for a visa and course” figure comes from, because from what I’m currently seeing, if gyms are genuinely expecting 9–12 month enrolments now for DTV approval, the costs seem WAY higher than that. I’d pay £1,000 in a heartbeat.

Purchased minimum 12 months so u can re enter after 6 months , I don’t recommend take less because they can always say to take an Ed visa for less than 1 years ! Why u need a 5 years visa for

He’s already said why a 6-9 month course - because usually people commonly like to train in different gyms in different areas rather than be stuck to one place

Muay Thai DTV Update

I’ve just had a meeting with the Sports Authority of Thailand / Board of Boxing Sport, and there are a few important updates I’d like to share regarding the DTV visa and Muay Thai courses.

They informed me that the DTV visa is here to stay, but the requirements for Muay Thai courses will become stricter.

Key points:

Six-month Muay Thai courses may soon no longer be accepted for DTV applications. In some cases, applicants may instead be issued an METV.

Gyms offering DTV courses are now being inspected to ensure they meet the correct standards for accepting foreign students.

New certificates will be issued to approved gyms, and in the future, embassies may request this certificate as part of the DTV application process.

This is a positive step for the industry and should help make the process clearer, more professional, and more reliable for genuine students.

Footnote:

I am not sure exactly how much control the Sports Authority / Board of Boxing Sport has over the final decisions made by individual embassies.

However, I personally consider this information reliable enough to act on.

Muay Thai Fever is now preparing for our gym inspection, and we have withdrawn our six-month DTV course.

We understand many customers are looking for the most affordable option, and that a nine-month course is more expensive.

However, we do not want to see people risk rejection by applying with a course that may no longer meet the expected requirements.

Most people won’t want to spend 5 years training at the same Muay Thai gym in the same area, which is understandable.

9 months is widely accepted, so just recommending from what I have seen first hand.

9 month soft power package, legitimate financial documents above requirements and majority of places you should be fine.
