From what I'm seeing, 9 months of whichever soft power activity you are doing seems to be the recommended minimum now. It used to be 6 months, but things are changing. You MIGHT be ok with 6 months, but if you can you might want to sign up for the extra 3 months so you don't get rejected or given a METV instead of the DTV.

Having an ED visa in the past isn’t going to prevent you from future visas. Immigration wants you to be on the proper visa for your current situation. I had 3 consecutive EDs and had no problem getting approved for DTV.
