What are the challenges in renewing a DTV visa extension in Koh Samui?

DTV Vista Extension Koh Samui.

Thought Idd write my experience as other posts on this site have helped me before.

Getting a six month extension on your DTV is not for the faint hearted, my advice would be to factor in a trip to another country around the time of your extension as it would be far easier to just renew your DTV on re entry.

After five separate trips to Samui Immigration I finally got my renewed vista stamp, I basically had to represent my whole DTV application again plus updated financial statements and business portfolio, including my UK tax affairs… as well as this I had to prove my accommodation for at least three months on Samui and my landlord had to update all his landlord papers and ID card as the laws on leasing properties has changed in Thailand recently.

I presented about a 30 page document in all including a TM7, STM2 and updated TM30.

So if it wasn’t for my excellent and helpful landlord plus the excellent staff at Samui Immigration I wouldn’t have got anywhere and would have been forced to take an unwanted trip to Singapore as an emergency get out clause.

So a big up to the fantastic staff at Samui Immigration, it’s not their fault that renewals of DTVs have been dumped on them by federal gov, to even communicate whats needed for all the different aspects of a DTV is difficult enough let alone implement them to the government guidelines so I am indebted to their patience and professionalism.

In short bounce out the country, forget the masses of paper work and don’t give yourself, your landlord and the immigration staff the headache. Lesson learnt. Peace. 😊
Answer summary
Renewing a DTV visa in Koh Samui can be a challenging process, involving multiple visits to the immigration office and extensive paperwork. The author describes their experience of five trips to immigration, requiring documentation such as financial statements, a business portfolio, and proof of accommodation, which has recently become more demanding due to changes in local laws. Helpful staff and an accommodating landlord were crucial for completing the renewal successfully. The author advises that, instead of going through the lengthy extension process, it may be easier to leave the country and renew the visa upon re-entry, thereby avoiding the headache of paperwork.

Doing an extension on a DTV makes absolutely no sense and is by no means worth the hassle of possible rejection and having to put all of that paperwork back together again when you can simply jump on a plane cheaply fly out and fly back in in two to three days.

TAT bleats about falling tourist numbers yet never once do they suggest that ALL offices apply the same arduous rules. I'm about to renew my annual retirement 'visa' for the 21st time. I dread it; not least queuing for an hour or so in 30+ temperatures just to get my docs checked for a ticket to enter Pattaya soi 5. I'm 83 now and a bit unsteady on my pins.

I have toyed with that idea; the cheapest quote was 7000 baht AFTER I got all the papers/bank letter together. 7K to save me an hour or so seemed expensive.

Mike Bell ok..hopefully you get some assistance when there. Have you checked about pre booking an appointment? I think there was an online system set up to pre-book immigration appointments.

I started the process 1 week before it expired, this is not long enough as I was left with two days so if it got rejected my flights would have been double expensive.

What do you mean it’s not the immigration’s ”fault” they are making DTV extensions more or less impossible lol?
Unforgettabl*************

MemorablePomegranate4083 They’re hardly impossible. It’s just that people don’t like having to prove that they still meet the conditions of the visa.

MemorablePomegranate4083 Good, because there are too many low class folks on this visa. I give it another years before they cancel it entirely.

About 5 months after the DTV was launched Immigration HQ in Bangkok issued guidance on extensions. It was up to local immigration to interpret these and add on local requirements. The landlord and accom stuff looks to me totally a Samui Immigration add on and not "Federal Government".

5555 The announcement with the requirements for an Extesnion of Stay where published after a few days of introduction of this visa.

BUT Yeah, Immigration Officers again have no clue about the rules dumped on them by their own organisation.

Visit 1 get the list and make appointment,.

Prepare all documents, double check.

Visit 2 apply at appointment date.

BUT you may choose for

Visit 1, visiti 2 visit 3 visit 4 visit 5 etc etc

because bouncing out from Samui costs 15,000 baht and takes a whole day. Many people would prefer to prepare paperwork which takes at most 2 Hours.

Well, given all the warning, the failure-to-success ratio, that's obviously up to them. They aren't short of money, or they wouldn't have a chance with the new document proof that's needed. As for the day that's needed...well...show me any remote worker or soft-power person in Thailand who doesn't several of these every month!

I understand your point, but I think going that way is false economy.
Sam ******

@Karl ******
some people actually genuinely satisfy the conditions of the DTV and providing the documents is no issue. Why would you waste a day and

baht when you already had the documents?

False economy in your mind. Plenty of remote workers work 3 days a month ... so, why would they spend 24 - 48 hours on a trip - during which they certainly make no money and only lose money?

I think it was about December 2024 when the central guidance came out. Somebody posted it here. I think they obtained it from Krabi or somewhere. I think the accommodation and landlord details are all local requirements.
