Thailand offers Visa free entries for some, entries with visa for others and offers different types of visa for those who like to stay a little longer than a holiday.

But these visa's do have requirements as set by the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau and approved by the Thai Government.

To help people out with their questions this page is made by volunteers, people who are crazy enough to dig into these Immigration rules and try to understand and even get up to date to inform others.

Yes, to give the best advice, some will take a look at your Facebook profile, to see about your history in Thailand or to see that your work inside Thailand but only ask to be a tourist for the next two months. But you can fool us, as we do not have access to any Immigration database or what ever. You only fool yourself, because you will end up denied at one point if you just give us half or even less of the information.

Many times you will read: Get a Visa that fits the purpose of your stay, I tried to make a list of the most used visa's and the way Thai Immigration sees it purpose.

What kind of visa fits your purpose of stay:

1) 15 Day Visa on Arrival, for 21 countries and short time holiday makers

2) 30 day free Visa Exempt Entry, for short time holiday makers

3) 60 Day Tourist Visa, for holiday makers who has a more time to spend.

4) Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, holiday makers who like to travel around the region during the 6 months of validity of this visa.

5) Non Immigrant Visa, this visa gives you 90 days of stay and could be based on multiple reasons, most used reasons are:

- Being over 50 years of age

- Married to a Thai National

- Dependent on partner with valid visa or Extension of Stay

- Parent of half Thai children

- Volunteer work

6) Non Immigrant ED visa, to study inside Thailand

7) The Non Immigrant B visa

For long stay there is the:

8) Thai Elite Visa, based on the tourist visa for a stay of 5, 10 or 20 years.

9) Non Immigrant O-A or O-X (Long Stay) Visa based for over 50 years of age.

If you like to engage in any work or profession while you are physically inside Thailand, you need a Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor AND a visa that allows you to work in combination with this Work Permit.

Please stop shooting the messenger who explain, they did not make the rules.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post outlines various visa options available for foreigners wishing to stay in Thailand, including the requirements set by the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau. It covers short-term options like the 15-Day Visa on Arrival and 30-Day Visa Exempt Entry, as well as longer-term choices such as Non-Immigrant Visas for retirees, spouses of Thai nationals, and the Thai Elite Visa. It emphasizes the importance of selecting the appropriate visa based on the purpose of the stay and notes that a work permit is necessary for employment in the country.

What is difference between O -A and O-X? Can O-X be applied for in Thailand?
Robert *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
No, also the Non Immigrant O-X can only be applied for in your home country and is only available for a few countries passport holders. Visa is valid 10 years, give you 5 years on entry, but has a lot more requirements.

This is an excellent page for good advice. If you want gossip and anecdotal advice that can't be relied on perhaps you should post on this other unmoderated page.

Is non immigrant O same as what is referred to as β€œnon-O” visa.

If so, Is work, with permit, permissible under both non O and non X?

Are both visas obtained in home country?

I am over 50 and married to a Thai woman.

Thank you.

The Non Immigrant O-X visa is for people over 50 years who do not wish to work anymore. It is the only visa at the moment with the health insurance requirement, but gives you 5 years of stay at arrival. The Non Immigrant O visa can be based on being married to a Thai National and depending on enforcement of the Thai Embassy/Consulate where you apply there are financial requirements. OR if you apply within Thailand for this Non Immigrant O visa based on marriage with a Thai National, you need or the Visa Exempt Entry or the Tourist Visa with minimum 15 or 21 days left on your valid stay and a bank account with 400.000 Thb in your name

Yes, the non-immigrant "O" is the same as a "non-O" visa. The "O" stands for others. There are lots of different "O" visas, some for volunteering, some for retirement, and some for marriage. I am not familiar with a Non-X visa though.

The Non-O for the basis of marriage can only be given outside of Thailand, however for *MOST* nationalities you can get them at other embassies. I believe you are American, and it is extremely common for someone to get a Non-O visa on the basis of marriage in Laos. You can get a work permit on that visa s well.

I believe all retirement visas forbid you from working (because you're retired, after all).

Is classic tourist visa with visa runs (2 x border) + (2 x flight)/year, as we have known it for years, still possible?
Robert *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Classic Tourist Visa? I guess the Single Entry Tourist visa for 60 days, possible extension with 30 days then a border run for 30 days Extension for 30 days, new border run for 30 days extension for 30 days, gives a total of 7 months in Thailand. Is possible or just go for the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, get 60 days on entry, border run 60 days, border run 60 days, just before valid until date border run for 60 days, extension with 30 days and you have 270 days days.

Thank you Robert Lagas for your information, I am sure it has saved many wasting money and time and guided many ,myself included to the correct visa and all necessary paperwork and in most cases applicable costs. Keep up the good public service that you and the others provide

If i had this to start, i wouldn't have paid 60k baht for a proper retirement Visa. Man, short of pulling my pants down, that was harsh....

Good advice Robert. The rules seem to change daily, at border to border!

Well run informative page with accurate information . Can't ask for more than that. And although sometimes I am enjoying a thread with unnecessary comments I agree that once the correct information has been given, stopping inaccurate and confusing info is needed.

By using the incorrect visa you shoot your self in the foot

Excellent post Robert, the golden rule is choose the visa/method that is "appropriate" to your stay. If you want to stay here longer than the method you chose, you have already made one mistake. Don't make more mistakes. You must have the right visa, don't try and do it on multiple inappropriate visa/method. You will ultimately be denied entry and more.

Thank you very much all of the team who provide many of us and more stupid foreigners who not know the laws or trust more their bar friends then you.
