TLDR : Answer Summary
The community is discussing recommendations for visa agents in Hua Hin and Bangkok. A member mentions a visa service operated by Orn in Hua Hin, specifically for retirement visas. Several comments explore the pros and cons of using agents versus handling visa processes personally, with insights on financial requirements and the nature of some visa agencies. There are also mentions of other visa types, such as the Non-ED visa linked to educational institutions, and experiences that highlight the complexities of navigating visa regulations in Thailand.

Let's all remember that ALL the many hundreds of b/s tiny agents scattered around the country run their paper (that is your visa/extension application) thru one of the GIANT "agent's agent" clearing houses.

All those smaller agents do is take a cut and send your passport/documentation to them to get the visa/extensions.

(Except in Pattaya where the small agents deal directly with the immigration office)

Getting a visa/extension from an agent is getting a REAL stamp from a REAL immigration office, by a REAL immigration officer it's just gotten by "alternate means".

Technically it's not illegal, because all the clauses in the police order have the "or as deemed appropriate by the issuing officer" wording, meaning they can say you can have the visa/extension without meeting ANY of the requirements IF they deem it appropriate 😛

Now it's not a secret, I am 100% anti-agent. Even thought the group I primarily post in and drive was purchased by the most well know (as in best publicized/advertised) visa agency in thailand, I'm still anti-agent.

I think that most people who meet the qualifications are at least almost intelligent enough to "push their own paper" and they don't need to resort to an agent to get a visa/extension.

Yes, this is what I always say. The whole purpose of using an agent is when you don't meet all criteria. There is no point in paying 35-40k baht for 1 year if you meet all requirements. Such requirements are often idiotic and nobody should feel guilty of using agents in desperate times. I will give you the Non-O based on marriage example. You could pre-covid go to Savannakhet and get it without any financial requirement. So why is it that since Covid you need 400k in bank account to do it within Thailand? If such requirements are so important why u could get it pre-covid without? It's part of the scheme where everyone gets their cuts so they keep the requirement so agents can operate and make banks. Everyone is winning, sort of, and nobody is hurt in the process of getting bribes. I don't think that it is unethical to do so. As for 90 days report, an agent can do it for 500 baht. 500 baht or driving 90 min to Khon Kaen and 90 min back, hmm... not a tough decision.

no one gets hurt due to corruption ? really ? ridiculous comment. Any scam or fake agencies should be locked up same as any corrup io. BTW it's always been 400k requirement in country that's why many went to Savannakhet and HCM for non o ME.
Maxim ***********
@David ******
I am pointing out the uselessness of the 400k requirement, which solely exists "in-country" to allow agents to make money with IO officers and everyone else involved. I have no problem with it, just saying.

Scam and fake agencies are one thing, but this is not what I'm talking about. If someone pays 35k baht for a visa with an agent because he doesn't meet the financial requirements, nobody is hurt. The agent makes money, IO makes money, and you get the valid stamp. What you are worry about is completely different.
John **********
@Maxim **********
such a ridiculous interpretation. Just stop and think for a moment. You use a dodgy agent this year. Next year you want to do it yourself and not pay an agent. What's going to happen?
Maxim ***********
@John *********
Nothing. Do you have recent proof of a change in that regard?
Tod *********

@John *********
is correct, once you start down the slippery slope of using an agent to get your visa/extension under the table and then wanna get the next one above the table by meeting the requirements yourself can be a tricky thing to pull off,

ESPECIALLY for retirement extensions where the agency banks the money for you.

The seasoning rule is you need to have the money IN your account for 3 months after you get your extension <- meaning the one you got from the agency last year AND seeing as agents just put the money in and take it right back out, you'd need to bank the 800K baht of your own on the day you got the extension to meet the 3 months after rule,

That's not even factoring in that the agent probably got you an out of province extension stamp that you're going to get grief from at your local office for having (they'll know it's an agent gotten stamp in one second)

It's not easy to go from under the table visa extensions to above the table ones not at all

@Tod ********
I do not disagree with you. Ive seen people been asked more money then they should at immigration because they had previous history with agent. So the officer expected to be own a bribe because he had access to your history. I just havent heard enough stories that turned badly in such regard to be that worry. I am under 50 so im not familiar with retirement visa process but I trust you on that. But for example, If I get a marriage extension with agent, and next year I decide to do Ed Visa on my own, I dont think my previous marriage extension with agent will be a big deal. I could be wrong, but its a different process. I dont find 30-40k baht a year a hard price to pay to have peace of mind. Its less then $100 usd a month. This is obv temporary solution until they comes up with any kind of visa which will be open to the "digital nomads". I know that you hate agents, but the system suck for people around my age (36 years old), not rich, but make enough from his laptop (100k baht a month on average), to never be a liability while contributing to the economy. Im getting married next week so things should get easier moving forward but it suck that in neighbor countries like Cambodia its so easy to get work visa, or long term visa in Vietnam.
Maxim ***********
Depend on which agent, which reports, and during which month of Covid. I'm sure you understood my point of the necessity of agent in some circumstances.

@Maxim **********
, Incorrect, Most agents charge 100b - 200b for 90 Day Report.

There's one school down in Phuket that can pull 90 day Non-ED and a year extension, Genius Language I think is the name.

They are not cheap. BUT they can get you the 15 months (3-12) on an ED visa.

There's also a hand to hand combat school up in Chiang Mai run by a thai guy named Jet. He offers ED visas/extensions, as does the thai language program at CMU (Chiang Mai university) but you have to show up and study (or online).

I think the Phuket one is just pay and pretend to study 😮 not quite sure .

@Tod ********
Are you still mods/admin on the bigger group? I am pleasantly surprised to see you suggest the "dont go to school" option in Phuket :). Youve been very active here since the bigger group got sold, not a coincidence.
David *******
@Maxim **********
maybe because of the people who bought it ?

@David ******
The bigger group was bought by my agent which Ive been dealing with since 2010. So yes, I am happy by the news, hehe.

To hopefully get an education visa or visa advice.
Maxim ***********
@Ron *******
A quick precision on Ed Visa. When I say that it's not possible atm, I mean from agents that I know are legit. I obv don't know every single agent in Thailand, but the few that I trust do not offer the Ed Visa since late last year. I've heard people saying that some agents offered them Ed Visa recently, but I would not recommend this route atm as the chance of getting scammed is high. As for volunteer visas with agents, impossible, this doesn't change. There was a major crackdown late last year.
Maxim ***********
@Ron *******
To answer your question. Ed Visa with agent will most likely be possible again between May and July, it's not possible atm. On the other hand, volunteer visa with agent won't be possible anytime soon. The only 3 long-term options with agent atm are retirement visa (if you are 50 years old+), marriage visa (extension based on marriage, you need to be legally married which the full process is quick), or having a Thai child (spouse). If available, some self-defense ed visa done without an agent might be a good option. Things will shake up a lot agent related in the next few months.

@Maxim **********
you are a proverbial fount of knowledge (y)
Maxim ***********
@Tod ********
+, when it comes to agents, you wouldn't know, you don't like them, talk to them, nor have used any agent service in the past. You are "anti-agent", nothing wrong with that.
Maxim ***********
@Tod ********
It seems you have been out of touch since January. Everything has changed the last few months, everything.
Tod *********
@Ron *******
as a general rule you get education visas by actually going to a school and talking to them, enrolling to study some subject 😉

OR

Are you just wanting the visa to further your stay here and not all that concerned about studying or learning anything?
Maxim ***********
@Tod ********
You should give him real advice instead of regurgitating your hate for agents. I get it, the group you were running got bought by an agent company, this goes against everything you stand for. But this group has a lot more freedom in that regard. Remember that this group was created by people who got banned from the bigger group you were running, so the level of freedom is much higher here. OP already mentioned wanting agent recommendations, so you know what he is looking for, no need to be sneaky.
David *******
@Maxim **********
no agent should be allowed in any help group and I would advise people to be very careful what they post !
Maxim ***********
@David ******
I'm not sure if you are aware but the bigger Thai visa advice group is now owned by the biggest visa agent in Thailand. + the Thai reopening group is owned by a travel agency company. You can post wtv, nothing to worry about.
