Should I Make the move.

I’ve been in an abusive relationship for 7 years. I’m on the verge of leaving finally. I’ve been to Thailand alone or with my daughter (13) at least ten times over the years, hiring cars and travelling it. It’s our happy place. Her dad is an amazing dad/friend (not who I’m with now) and we share her 50/50. When I leave this relationship I have two choices, buy a house in the uk or move to Thailand. I have the money, the remote job, I speak a bit of Thai and would love to learn it for real at classes over there. I’ve always wanted to move, but never had the chance. I don’t know what to do and I don’t want to take my daughter out of UK education, she could stay with her Dad and fly out or I fly back on school holidays etc. I’m sure I know enough about Thailand to know I’ll be happy, she’ll possibly want to come too, we’ve spent so many years dreaming of one day going.

Many UK based curriculum international schools in Thailand . Try it for one year and see how it goes. “The only failed attempt is the one you didn't make."

This seems like something to get coaching on with a pro rather than asking a group like this.

UK education can be followed here at some international schools, but it won't be cheap. I think the idea of school in the UK and then coming out here for holidays is probably your best option. My Pal's kids are pretty much doing this now due to the fact they can't go with him on his next overseas posting. School in the UK: during term time, they stay with him or their mother during the holidays. It seems to be working out great. The girl has just got a fantastic university offers.

This is not the place for a post like this. Asking random people in a community for visa advice to help you make a life altering decision… you don’t need our permission and you shouldn’t leave us to decide for you

My humble contribution: child first. Remember that 80% of the time you'll spend with your daughter in your whole life will happen before her 18th birthday. Stay in the UK until she graduates, then offer to take her for a sabbatical year with you in Thailand — and from there, see where you want to live.

Why force the kid to go to school in another country when she is fine at home

One thing I’ve learnt from life is to always try and be happy. Life is too short. If Thailand is your happy place and your daughter loves it too. It’s a no brainer. Thailand is healing.

SereneZebra9074 Sorry, but being a beatnik isn't a life plan. This is the most important period in this young girl's life — the time when she has the chance to get an education. Is she going to start high school at 22? Or never? And then what?

I completely understand wanting a fresh start after an abusive relationship, and Thailand is a wonderful place to live. But what I don’t understand is why the choice seems to be between moving alone or leaving your daughter behind.

Thailand has some excellent international schools, and if this has been a dream you’ve both shared for years, why not take her along for the adventure and let her be part of your new chapter?

She’s 13 and has spent years watching her mum navigate a difficult relationship. She may have been affected by that more than you realise. After everything you’ve both been through, I would have thought the priority would be building a new life together, not seeing her only during school holidays.

Thailand will still be there in a few years if she decides she’d rather stay in the UK, but these teenage years with your daughter are something you can never get back. For me, that would be the deciding factor.

Focus on leaving the relationship first. Once you are out of the dangerous situation, then evaluate what you want to do longer term. Can you rent a short rental in the country (UK?) for a month? This will give you time to think through the move without having the pressure of the abusive partner hanging over you

That’s a bigger problem than the DTV. This visa doesn’t mean you have to live here, but it gives you the choice to come as much as you’d like for 5 years and are ABLE to live here on it if you choose to.

You can always keep Thailand as your happy place.
