Psychiatry Needs

Hi Everyone. I am relocating to Thailand in April/May 2027. I need to engage with a Psychiatrist for continuity of care and to maintain my medication regime. I have done significant research but would appreciate any advice from people that have been in this position. I will be travelling throughout Thailand for the first 12-18 months before settling on a permanent basis. I am coming from Australia.
Answer summary
The discussion highlights essential information for expats looking for psychiatric care in Thailand, emphasizing the importance of continuity of care for medication management. Several participants recommend researching telehealth services due to the transient nature of travel. Opinions vary on local psychiatric care; while some advise considering private facilities due to overcrowding in government hospitals, others caution that mental health resources may not be ample outside major cities. Specific hospitals and practitioners are suggested, but a clear warning is given regarding medications, especially controlled substances that may not be as readily available.

Public hospital is very cheap but very long queue especially for psychiatrist. Like 3-6 months advance schedule for first visit.

Be sure to have your insurance or pay your own support as it is up to 10k-20k thb per visit in private hospital.

Psy doc is not widely available in smaller hospital. Which means you will need to live in big city. Outside Bangkok, Thai people tend to be chill and rely more on buddhism meditation.

If you are having moderate problem, it should be fine. But dont come if you are not in control.

Not the place to go , if you have issues you can’t control . Saying that , if you have a script , you can go to most pharmacists and just buy it . No need to see a doctor . Fly back home if you need to see your own doctor .

They have US trained psychiatrists at Bumrungrad. But if you're on a controlled substance like Adderall, you won't be able to get it here.

If you will be in chiang mai Dr. Kittawan works out of the mental health hospital and her private clinic and speaks good English, some mental health medications can only be filled by a hospital. There is also a telehealth service with English speaking doctors. Enjoy your travels.

A good one to plan in advance on as you are. MedConsult Clinic as also recommended below would be a good starting point and has worked well for medication dispensing for a friend that also relocated for Australia. Bumrungrad was extremely expensive for the medication I needed but also an option. Good luck 🍀

There are psychiatric hospitals throughout the country, Private and government. I highly recommend the private as the government’s are extremely, I meant extremely overcrowded you would not even want to know how overcrowded it is and let’s be honest those hospitals are not the place you’d want to see in that sides of the World.

Here are some big one ; สวนปรุง By Chaing Mai(North) ศรีนครินทร์ By Khon Khean, ศรีมหาโพธิ์ In Unonrajchathani both are Northeast, สวนสราญรมย์ By Surajthani which is in the South Thailand. Bangkok and the surrounding area are also located, ศรีธัญญา by Nonthaburi/ สมเด็จเจ้าพระยา by Kong-San BKK. Morning Mind and Manarom are private psychiatric hospitals by BKK. And so much more.

This is what I found online. I imagine telehealth is probably more convenient since you won't have a permanent location.

Mental health isn't recognised or taken care of in Thailand. Advice, for your own mental health, stay where you are, with the proper support and medical care!
