When applying for a tourist visa at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur, one of the requirements states needing booking accomodation for my entire stay in Thailand as well as the tax id of the hosts. Is this strictly enforced? Has anyone gotten a tourist visa at the KL embassy recently?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for confirmed accommodation and a tax ID of the hosts when applying for a tourist visa at the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur is strictly enforced. Recent experiences indicate that proof of pre-paid accommodation is necessary, and not simply a booking that can be canceled.

Yes, all of the Thai embassies in neighboring countries have been strictly enforcing the guidelines on their websites. You couldn't even get a tourist visa from Kuala Lumpur until recently, and there are other embassies that are enforcing the same requirement lately.

As a note, the ones that require booking and tax ID usually require proof that it's pre-paid and not something you can just cancel.

what if you’re not staying in paid accommodation but with a significant other, etc.? Also, it seems a bit ridiculous to force a visitor to have everything planned out and paid for in advance. The backpacker crowd certainly doesn’t do that.

Thank you for the answer. I guess I'll just do a visa-exempt entry for 45 days if they're gonna make it this hard.

Don't expect that to be a smooth ride either - depending on your stamp history.
