TLDR : Answer Summary
The ED (Education) visa is classified as a non-immigrant visa, but opening a bank account with it may not be straightforward. There have been reports of banks denying account openings to ED visa holders, particularly for those studying at language schools. While some individuals successfully opened accounts using the ED visa along with documentation from their school and immigration, others faced challenges or restrictions, indicating that policies can vary and may change.
I was able to open a bank account in Krungthai Bank under ED visa last year, the school provided me with paperwork from immigration and the ministry. I never had the chance to open in Kasikorn or Bangkok
Bank because they didn’t accept it that’s why I ended up with Krungthai. Good riddance.
I think that most people with genuine accounts have nothing to worry about. If you had an agent open an account for you that's different, in which case I'd recommend you take your passport and go visit your bank branch and talk to them
The ED is a non-immigrant visa. But that doesn't necessarily mean it will be easy to open a bank account. There have been many reports from as far back as last year of banks refusing to open accounts for ED visas for people going to language schools. Even if you can find a bank that will do it, they will likely require a residence certificate from immigration and a letter from your school.
Hi Brandon! What if I had opened a Bangkok Bank account on a Tourist Visa in 2021, and am now currently on a 5 Year University Student Visa. Will I need to talk with them and make sure they have my updated visa on record to be able to keep my account?
