TLDR : Answer Summary
A user with a Non-O marriage visa in Thailand is uncertain about whether to pay a law firm 7500 THB to assist with opening a Thai bank account or to attempt the process independently. Community members advise going through the process alone, highlighting the importance of having necessary documents like a passport, marriage certificate, and residency certificate. They also caution about the difficulties due to current banking regulations but share personal experiences of successfully opening accounts without agency assistance, suggesting that patience and perseverance can yield good results.

A pal recently booked an appointment at Siam Legal in Bangkok to open a new account. They charged 5,000 baht. It took 15 minutes.

I recently opened a bank account with Bangkok Bank. Needed passport with Non O visa stamp, rental agreement, 3 forms of ID and also proof of residency notification with immigration. They told me they needed to send everything to their H/O and it would take 2 weeks. I also had to deposit 800,000 baht, which I cannot touch for 4 months. They have now advised me they have now increased this period to 6 months for any new foreigners opening an account. It also took me 2 hours to process everything at the bank when I went to finally open the account. It was very painful.

every little thing with this particular bank involved H/O and at least 7-10 business days!! Tried changing my phone number was told the above line so I cut it off. Closed all my 40+ years accounts with them and done. Walked to a different bank and made the changed happen within seconds. Not recommend this bank to anyone.

I just opened my account with a small deposit. I now have to make my final 800,000b deposit .Im not looking forward to doing this because of the exchange rate USD to Thai baht but I need the bank account to stay. My story is different then yours i have to maintain my 800,000b for two months.

Banking's a real mess here right now. It can't/won't be like that forever.

7500ąøæ will cover a LOT of ATM fees until the situation improves, or you get a long-term visa that allows you to painlessly open an account yourself, for free.

Wait it out.

Edit: Of course, the best move is to visit a branch or two yourself and get it straight from the bank. There are changes every day, so knowing what worked (or didn't) for somebody a month ago may no longer be true.

He says he has a 90-day non-O. No mention of a one-year extension of stay.

Apparently many banks will not open accounts for 90 day visa holders. Many, many reports of that. But I don't have personal experience attempting opening a bank account with only a 90-day visa without an extension of stay.

But I agree that if he has a one-year extension of stay, opening an account himself should be easy. I did it myself at Kasikorn a couple months ago. Painless, free, and quick.

That's not what I have heard from a LOT of people who tried, but by all means, he should give it a shot.

I know Kasikorn in Central Festival Pattaya has a printed sheet listing the specific requirements and documents needed, and the staff spoke good English and was very helpful.

Certainly a better place to seek info on this topic than here.

Should be able to do it yourself.

Might need to visit a fair few branches until you get one that will do it for you.

But make sure you have all the papers with you, so you don't meet another person another time saying it's not possible.

You need your passport, a copy or your marriage certificate, and a residence certificate from Immigration. Some branches might ask for more. But those are the basics.
