I know this is a silly question, but I'll ask anyway: I'm using Western Union for the first time tomorrow, but there will be a gap of a few hours between the money being sent and when I can actually pick it up. Is there any risk of someone taking or stealing the money?
Answer summary
The original poster is concerned about the safety of funds sent via Western Union, particularly if there is a delay of a few hours before pickup. Responses indicate that as long as the unique MTCN code is not shared, it is generally safe. Several users also recommend alternative services like Wise or local bank transfers, citing Western Union's higher fees and variable speed.

I have used WU many times to send myself money to Thailand

Sometimes it reaches my bank in a few minutes or a few days.

The fee is small, especially if you use the online version, and the rate is reasonable.

There have been no security issues.

I hope it goes well for you.

What planet you been living on man? Don't you know nothin'? Rest assured for starters it only takes minutes; no one can collect until you forward the recipient with the secure MCTN code but hey WU are one of the most expensive international transactions agents, I've used Remitly for the past year much cheaper, many transfers and never a bother 👊

Weatern Union rips you off go to any Krungsri bank in thailand with your passport and debit card and buy thai baht at the teller.

that way saves you alot of money - you will go off your BANK rate for exchange
Steve *******

Andrew Romine The Thai banks give the best exchange rates, much better than Wise

Steve Greir really ??? Yeah i beg to differe the rate on the Thai ATM is always lower its the same rate i see on western union
Ralph *******

Andrew Romine The banks tend not to give good exchange rates.
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
Ralph Tyson its better then weatern union - when you do it this way it uses your home bank exchange rate in my experiance is better then western union and their fees added.

For example when you use a thai atm and you select "no continue with out conversion" you are using YOUR banks exchange rate not the rate of the thai bank / atm
Steve *******

Andrew Romine Send the money in your home Country currency, exchange it to Baht in Thailand. You will get the best rate!

Tomas Arndt used them for the last 17 years and not once had delay or interference. Dont quite get the "slow". Maybe you are choosing other than their money in minutes service that performs well and charges are as competitive as all other.
