Is it acceptable to use a business bank account for my DTV visa application in Thailand?

I have a question regarding my bank statement.

My account still shows a business name (one word) along with my full name. The business was a sole proprietorship (B2B) and was officially closed several months ago. However, I have not changed the bank account since then, and I am still using the same account for personal purposes.

The account is effectively used as a private account now, even though it technically remains a business account in name.

Would this be acceptable for the DTV visa application, or could it cause any issues?
Answer summary
The user inquires whether they can use a bank statement showing both their name and a business name for a DTV visa application after closing their sole proprietorship. Many commenters advise that a personal bank account is necessary, and having a business name on the account could cause problems during the visa application process. They suggest moving funds to a personal account to avoid complications, as embassies typically prefer funds in a personal account solely under the applicant's name.

In the true letter of the law they have to be your personal funds. So the account must be in your name. However they will accept a joint account where the account has two names they discount the funds by 50%. It's a really grey area if the account name at the top of the page is your name along with the business you may get away with it or they may consider it a joint account and only count 50% or may reject it totally. No one is going to be able to answer this because even if they got away with it you may not. It's going to depend on the person assessing your application. If you want to get approved I'd get those funds moved to a personal account to give yourself the best chance.

You ask as you well know you broke the rules of the bank.

Closing a company but keeping the bank account from this company open is not allowed at any bank.

Using this illegal bank account to apply for official Government documents is simply .....

You may fill it in.

Most embassies prefer to see the required funds held in a personal account under the applicant's name. If the account is technically considered a business account, you may be asked to provide additional documents showing that you are the sole owner and have full access to the funds.

Typically, this could include:

• Business registration or closure documents

• Evidence that you were the sole owner/signatory

• A letter explaining the situation if necessary

If the account is no longer linked to an active business and clearly shows your personal name as the account holder, it is often less of a concern. That said, requirements can vary between embassies, and the final decision is always at the discretion of the reviewing officer.

OP
Kati Kollom Yeah, I closed the business a few months ago; it was a sole trader business and I never employed anyone, nor do I intend to in the future. I treated the account as a personal account; there are no invoices for the previous two years because I had suspended the business.

If they look into it then they’ll probably see it’s a business account which generally isn’t accepted. Depending on where you’re applying from, you may have time to just transfer the funds from that account into a private chequing or savings account as some consular offices like the Embassy in London only require funds to be in the account for something trivial like 10 days.

UnforgettableRambutan8343 Hey - is that definitely true about London only needing the money to be in a personal account for a couple of weeks?

I was all set to apply for a personal METV then found out about the DTV... I've easily got the funds, but they're in my business accounts (as I just withdraw cash via dividends as needed), and I thought I'd read that you need to have the cash in a personal account for 3 months - but if what you're saying is true then I might be in luck! 🙏

Darren Sunley To confirm I’d reach out to the Embassy in London via email as they can detail how long the funds have to be in your account definitively.

I do recall seeing the 10 day figure in someone’s correspondence with the London Embassy on this page but things with the DTV are still fluid and that may have changed.

The bank account name must match exactly the name on the main ID (passport).

Recently I couldn't even persuade my bank to cash a cheque because all my ID includes my middle name but the cheque payee didn't.

No explanation or producing other IDs helped and I had to get the cheque reissued to include the middle name. They really are strict about this stuff.
