TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a retirement visa in Thailand, applicants can fulfill either of two financial requirements: maintain a minimum balance of 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or demonstrate a monthly income of 65,000 baht. It is noted that for the first year, immigration often prefers the 800,000 baht requirement, and some embassies no longer provide certified income letters, making the proof of funds in a bank account the more common alternative.

For a retirement visa it's one or the other. But for most their only option is the proof of funds in a Thai bank account because for the first year immigration will only accept embassy certified income and many embassies no longer offer this.
