Hi everyone,

If I transfer from an ED visa to a NON O for retirement purposes, how many days do I need left on my ED visa before I go to immigration to start the process? I think I read there is a 15 day consideration period?

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Transitioning from an ED visa to a NON-O visa for retirement purposes in Thailand requires careful planning. First, it's important to note that you cannot directly transfer between these visa types while in the country. Instead, you will need to change the reason for your extension based on education to one based on retirement. To start this process, make sure you have documentation from your educational institution regarding your studies' end date. It is advisable to approach immigration with ample time left on your ED visa, but there is no strict rule on how many days must remain; however, a smooth transition generally happens close to your current visa's expiration. The 15-day consideration period mentioned pertains to applications for in-country NON-immigrant type visas, which does not apply here.

The 15 day under consideration period you're talking about is when people are applying for an in country Non-immigrant type visa <- which you do NOT need to do. All you need to do is change the reason for your extension from one based on education to one based on 'retirement'.

I would bet dollars to durian that you are not on ANY Non-ED VISA and instead you're on an extension of stay based on education (LOOK at your current stamp).

IF that's the case and you want to "change reasons" for your extension (which IS allowed) you would get a letter from your school stating you stop studying on xxx date (usually the date your current extension runs out). You'd get the documentation together to apply for a yearly extension based on being over 50 (retirement) and get the bank letters, proof of funds etc.

You would go to the immigration office where you got your extension, cancel it, and immediately apply for a new extension based on being over 50 (retirement). If you have the correct documentation and proof of funds it would be granted on the spot. It costs 1900baht.

There is no 'transfer from an ED visa to a Non-O" option available :( You cannot change visa types inside the country (except to go from a tourist visa to a Non-Imm visa).
