Cards... Not needed these days with banking apps, virtual cards etc. I don't even have a card for my Thai bank with the advent cardless ATM withdrawals.
Navy federal FedEx new cards of credit card or debit card for free to Thailand. You need to check with some credit card company will not send new credit to a foreign address.
If you have a Thai address it will be sent to you, but in this dayband age slso have to declare where you are paying tax etc. That's for NZ other countries not sure.
The only problem is you really need to keep your home country credit cards active when living in Thailand . It’s very difficult for a foreigner to get credit cards and if you are travelling or need to go into hospital , even if you have insurance , usually they will only accept a credit card
All of my banking and other financials go to my resident address in my home country, which of course I still retain since I wish to travel back and forth several times periodically.
If you know someone at the bank in Canada and don't have address in thailand i emailed my the person she did a change in my mailing address and I got new card within 10 days by purolator I'm with a bank in alberta
I use a mail service Ipostal in the states. Changed my address to reflect and the service sends my mail here. You choose snail mail, UPS, FedEx or DHL next day. Regular mail takes 10 days.
David, we are from BC, we always inform our bank of our travel plans. Request a new debit card before we travel. Visa will register mail a new credit card to your location if you lose or need it renewed, courier will request your signature when delivering. As for debit card, I have not encountered that issue, we don't stay away for that long a period.
I always keep two or three debit/credit cards ready in case one gets lost and then my son or daughter are my mailing address (America) so they can get the cards sent to them and DHL over to Thailand.
I forward all my mail from my mail service to a relative, who puts it in a DHL and sends when I need it. Haven't found a better way, but Wise may be offering a debit card for Thailand soon if they aren't already.
Also yes I am still considered a Canadian as I will be paying taxes and not too Thailand because they have agreements I have RRSPs and money from my dad for the house
Barath Faust if you have no fixed Canadian address for new cards and residency. It will become an issue. The OP asked about not coming back for 5 years.
Melissa Batch You absolutely will not lose your cards. Unless you are completely daft. And you don't 'lose' your crappy healthcare either. They have no means of doing that. Rules depend on your province of health care plan. Canadians can retain your banking, your bank cards, your RRSP's, TFSA's, RRIF's, credit cards, debit cards etc. Would be absolutely foolish to give that up. And Wise is great. If you travel, or expatriate (like millions of other Canadians) you will indeed want to have Wise
Todd McGowan you need to have a Canadian billing address that you reside at. If you haven’t been to Canada for 5 years. You’ll have banking and healthcare issues.
My sister lost her healthcare when she became a Mexican resident full time with a home there.
Todd McGowan Easy, they stop paying or reimbursing you for anything that happened outside your province. Lets say that you had surgery in Thaïland, cost 5000$ can. You send them the invoice and they ask you to send them à copy of the thai stamp in your passport. That is not the end of the store. They then advise Revenu Canada that you are no longer à canadian résident and your tax Bill (from the date that you left Canada) in increased by 48% + penalty+ interest. Good luck getting your money back from your provincial gvt
Ive kept a UK address, my brothers, the card was delivered there, I received photographic copies to up date on line and it was then delivered my a good friend
You bank will only send cards to your registered address, so I changed it to my address in Thailand, cards and statements were sent here. This was with HSBC UK.
Bill Cox I have no doubt. US banks operating in the last century and in need of massive upgrades to their tech. But completely unnecessary for most people
I'm hoping it's a bit easier in Thailand. I tried for 2 months to get a new Schwab card sent to me in Vietnam. I've received FedEx and DHL to this Vietnam address, but Schwab customer service couldn't get the card to me. 6 separate, long, phone calls. Reassurances that "we can get it there", but every time it would end up not being shipped due to the shipping department saying it wasn't a valid address. I asked for them to get someone responsible/accountable from 'shipping', but was told that wasn't possible. I sent them both DHL and FedEx screenshots of new shipments to the address... but to no avail. Eventually I had it sent to a friend (in the US) that I was meeting in Japan to get it to me there. I used to be a huge Schwab fan, but their failure and lack of concern on this really dropped their reputation.
