Retiring in Thailand is what I would like to do sometime this year, I have been there three times in the past and really enjoyed it. My question is that if I did get all my ducks in a row and have 80000bt plus sitting in a Thai bank and decided I wanted to go back home or if I snuff it, can the money in the Thai bank be accessed by myself back home or my beneficiaries ?
Answer summary
The post discusses concerns one might have about accessing funds held in a Thai bank, particularly in the context of retirement and potential demise while living in Thailand or after returning home. It highlights that establishing a Thai bank account and a Last Will can facilitate access for beneficiaries in the event of the account holder's death. Additionally, various options for obtaining retirement visas and managing bank funds in Thailand are mentioned, implying that practical support systems and legal documents like a Thai Will can ease potential complications in accessing these funds for oneself or heirs.

You need a will and the executor has to apply to the court to get the funds released

During the current War on Farangs: cutting the VOA to 30; raiding the Nominee Agents/49% owners; there's never a crackdown on Visa agencies which promise boldly & upfront that they will provide the 800K for a few hours. Is this because Thai Immigration knows what side their bread is buttered on?

Mike Bell happened to me, agent put it in, in the morning and took it out in the afternoon. I put money in to take it up to just over the 800,000 a month later when I realised what they had done but still got a knock back on my extension renewal because the funds had not seasoned long enough. I then got a solicitor who also scammed me and got it the next day because he knew some one at immigration, so nothing to do with discretion and more to do with corruption and an expensive lesson learnt

Mike Bell It's because the law actually says "up to the discretion of the officer" which is the loophole.

Mike Bell yes. But if you get into trouble and they do a checkup and you lied on your visa application, then you will be in deep shit.

I assume that’s a typo and you meant 800,000 baht?

You can send the money back but if you do it right the money only needs to stay until your 2nd extension as long as you started 12 months of monthly transfers

I got the 800,000 THB in my bank account. I have set up a Thai Last Will. Should I pass away, the beneficiary is assigned as both - as the heir as well as the executor of my Last Will.

If you set up WISE, you can transfer it out of your Thai bank to your US bank...and beneficiaries?...you mean if you're dead abroad can your foreign beneficiaries get access to it...yes...a headache will ensue but yes..

you only need death certificate, copy of the will showing the name of beneficiary, then its dead easy.

Both my Thai and US banks are verified with WISE and I can go both ways...but if you don't transfer out from Thailand bank with WISE, for I think it's like 6 mos, you'll have to re-verify to connect the bank...it should also be known that currently only Bangkok Bank is partnered with WISE and you will pay extra for the conversion from Baht to USD...

Its 800.000 not 80 you make a will in Thailand as you would back home in case you pass away here , the bank issues a visa card , make sure its one you can access your account from another country . On the other hand you can use an agent then you don't actually put that 800k in they do it , thats going to cost more but its your choice .

Bernie Brown I have tried using my ATM Thai card in the UK and it doesn't work. Perhaps I need to inform them if going abroad. You could leave your money in your home country and transfer only what you need each month, just a thought.

The answer is yes but there are other options worth considering. A visa company can assist, so the 800k isn’t necessary. So basically land in Thailand and they will do it all for you, for a higher price mind you. (Best to arrive on a 3 month visa as that’ll save a bit of hassle.)

The best option though would be applying in your home country at the Thai embassy, get the retirement visa O-A prior to arriving and no need for the 800k in a Thai bank. That’ll give you 12 months here in Thailand straight away and then contact the visa companies and they can arrange for the visa extension, when the first initial visa runs out, saving you money as the extensions are a lot cheaper.

Jason Wheatley actually you can squeeze two years out of the OA visa If you have a year's worth of health insurance and make a final entry just before the visa expires.

Wannikea Wanblee and I suppose once you enter and get stamped in for another year, you could let the Thai approved insurance lapse and just get your own, right? Do IO’s check for insurance?

Jason Wheatley are you dreaming? If you start out on the Non-O/A visa, as soon as you switch to the 1-year extension, you need a mandatory tgia-listed Thai private health insurance, and no agent can save you from this requirement. And even if you started out on the Non-O/A visa, you need the 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account to be able to apply for the 1-year extension. You better start on the Non-Imm-O visa - it comes without the mandatory health insurance and the agent can front the deposit

The reason I asked this question is that it seems so hard to actually put money into a Thai bank, it would maybe harder to get it out from a foreign country 😕

Bernie Brown it is super easy to put money in a Thai bank.

Yesterday I walked in with 270k baht, they put it in my account immediately. Very easy.

And transfer with wise it takes about a minute or so from start until money shows up in your Thai bank.

David Bergin yes but this is exactly the reason BKB froze accounts. The Law is clear the funds has to be in your account some time before and after your application of a long stay visa and than it can’t trop under 400 000 THB or you have a problem with the next time.
