DTV holders can't open bank accounts. My landlord just returned my deposit as a check. How do I convert this into money without a Thai bank account? I'm not mailing this check to the US.
Answer summary
A DTV visa holder is struggling to cash a landlord's check due to the inability to open a Thai bank account. Suggestions from the community include cashing the check at a bank (preferably the same bank as the landlord), converting it at convenience stores like 7/11, or requesting cash directly from the landlord. Some comments express concern over the legitimacy of checks in Thailand, indicating that the experience varies among expats.

You should not have accepted a check, and nicely told him or the agent you are only able to accept cash.

Some bank accounts in America let you scan the check with your phone. I used to do that

NoughtyBadoof I use both American and British English but spell this word "cheque" to prevent people from getting confused with the other meaning of the word "check".

nobody is attacking American soldiers. Just making factual statements regarding those who could possibly be stupid enough to believe the election was stolen, just because the cult leader that they follow and worship like mindless sheep, keeps telling them it was.

And just to further educate you, a locked profile is no different then an anonymous posting. So you're stupid and a hypocrite. Got it. You're dismissed.

SugarFreeTruth2026 at least I use a real profile. Unlike you. And the election was stolen. It's crazy there's still misinformation being spread by far left crazies about the election.

who asked your opinion?

Sooner America awakes to how ridiculous they look on the world stage the better😂

You are taking Greenland, or not. And renaming the gulf of Mexico, or not. What your forces have done is start an needless war with Iran and become puppets of Putin and Russia.

Well done. No, I don't respect America soldiers. Or your democracy. Or your dictator Trump.

But thanks for asking.

I got a Tax Rebate in Thailand by cheque. Could not put it in my account. Could not cash it. Had to open new account at bank who issued it. Got ATM card and walked outside and drew out the money. Crazy system.

TheBatman1234567890 banks do cash foreign cheques, but they usually charge a fee for foreign cheques, and i may take up to 3 months to cash it. So before you deposit foreign cheque ask your bank about fees and processing time.

not sure what crossed cheque is but it had a stamp on it that said something similar to " only deposit into payee account" I tried to deposit the check into my GFs account and the bank said they couldn't do it. I had my landlord re-issue the check without that stamp and I think I can deposit it into my gfs account now.

One should know the boundaries. You take a cash cheque in exchange of account payee. Did you pay advance by any cheque?

PinkApricot4609 In some places you can only cash a check by depositing it into a bank account and it goes through a multi day clearing process. OP might be used to that practice.

supposedly if you go to the bank where the check is issued you should be able to get cash but maybe even so it might be trouble in USA? Usually a cashier's check is the safest?
Lynn ***********
Lynn ***********
MagentaYuzu5267 If there is a stamp on the front page "Account Payee Only", then it shall be deposited to the bank account. If it is "Cashier Cheque", it can well be cashed.

Didn't even know they had checks in Thailand, and I've been here 8 years and have 2 bank accounts.

Are you sure it's real? I'd just ask them to give you cash.

its 100% real, my landlord owns my property as a busniess and this question was partially hypothetical, I'll tell them I need cash instead of a check but I was wondering what one would do if the landlord gave a check and went no contact or something else weird happened.
Lynn ***********

Anonymous participant I hope the check is written for thai baht. Have you tried other SCB locations/branches? If all else fails, have your previous agent tell the owner to do cash or transfer to wise. If you know somone you trust in thai, you can also have owner transfer to that person you trust.
