TLDR : Answer Summary
To call the US from Thailand after buying a SIM card, you have several options. If you want to make a direct call, remove the leading '0' from the US number, and replace it with '+1' or '001-1' along with the area code. However, it's often cheaper to use internet-based applications like WhatsApp, Skype, FB Messenger, or Viber that allow free calls if you have a WiFi connection. Some users also recommend calling apps such as Mytello or Dialpad for more reliable calling options. Always ensure your recipient can also use these apps if you're opting for internet calls, as direct dialing can incur high charges.

Thai people use Line. Way better than skype.
Bob *******
Check with the carrier. Sometimes preceding with 009 or 005 gives you the best rate. Skype probably the best bet. If you have ms365 you get an hour free every month hen it’s only pennies a minute
Charles **********
I have 2 phones ... I dont change my home phone ... I use calling over wifi .. I get my text and phone calls ... the Sims card is for travel phone
T ****************
Use “Line” it’s free
Giovanni **********
You can’t! I’m a us citizen to and the problem is that US carriers, T-Mobile and the like, lock your phone to their service only. You must have them unlock your phone and only then will the Thai SIM card work. I’ve experienced this myself many times until I bought an unlocked phone then went to Google-fi, and now I can’t call from anywhere around the globe, without a SIM card
Tim ***********
You need a USA sim and wifi calling or use messenger, skype,.....

Line or messenger, no cost involved on WiFi.

I don't recommend that you use your data plan for international calls. It will cost you a fortune to do so. Instead, use options that are free using WIFI, such as WhatsApp and Messenger.

Easiest and cost free. Put your cell phone on Wifi calling. Connect to a reliable Wifi network. Can send and receive calls as if you are in the USA. Been doing this for years from several different countries.

Direct dialing will drain your credits. Use a mobile app instead, or Skype to call a landline.

I have a magicjack for the phone in my house here in the US. It comes with an app that allows you to use your home number for traveling and it works really well in Thailand for all calls to the US. It also has texting but I don't think you can send pictures or files but it's not really necessary for me because there are other ways for those things.
Andrew *********
Cheaper to dial 006-001-xxxxxxxxx
Djamee *********
Download WhatsApp or call from Messenger. It’s free 🆓

Use Watsapp line or messenger it’s free
Christian **********
Use Thai sim and download the Dialpad app. $15 per month and you can call to the US as much as you want. It's a VOIP essentially. You can call any number in the USA. No additional charges for you or the recipient.

We run our business through dialpad and make around 5,000 calls to the US each month. Even if I am out on the go and someone calls me via dialpad I still receive it with my Thai sim inserted. If I call you through dialpad it will ring your regular phone app. If the users calls me it will ring me on the dialpad app which requires data but you will have this through your thai sim.

Hope this helps.
Sunny ******
It is best to use WhatsApp or if you have iphone, FaceTime. It’s free if you have internet. If the person you are calling doesn’t have the apps then dial 001 or +1 followed by the area code and phone number.
Fabao ********
WhatsApp

use Whatsapp or LINE, when you are inside a WiFi. I do videochat on Facebook with my buddy in tennessee, on FB messenger. you just need to be connected to a free wiFi . . not even need a thai SIM card in your phone

Do you have a google (gmail) account? Then just use Google Voice. You get a real phone number that your US based contacts can call, you'll receive their call on your mobile. And you can call them from the app (for free). Note; you might need a US-phone number to receive an 'activation code' for google voice.

Or use Skype and pay a few $$ for cheap calls to USA. I never buy a SIM and use for calls, I use the available free WiFi that's most places and call using Skype for landlines, and WhatsApp or messenger for everything else.

I used the app Mytello. Cheap and always works.
Mark ********
Download Whatsapp

Free worldwide phone calls. You just need an internet connection...from a cafe or the like.
Christian **********
@Mark *******
Dialpad is way better. $15 and can call the regular phone app to US recipients. No need to use data based apps. Just need a VOIP.
Christian **********
Good point!
Mark ********
@Christian *********
but its 15 bucks. WApp is free.
Christian **********
@Mark *******
Yes, but it requires the recipient to have whatsapp. Dialpad calls the regular phone app. So it is dependent on who they're attempting to call. Both work well though
Charles ********
@Christian *********
and be online!
Charles ********
@Mark *******
surely the people you connect with need the same app, and are also online?
Ida **************
Anthony *********
@Charles *******
I’m not sure if you can do this from WhatsApp, but from Skype, you can pay for a service called “Skype out” where you can call any phone number in the world from your Skype account. The recipient doesn’t have to have Skype. Certainly, use the SIM’s data for these calls. There’s absolutely no reason to use a direct network call nowadays.
Mark ********
@Charles *******
they all have whatsapp
