Do I need to order a $4.99 SIM card to get an American number for calling from Thailand using the app?
Am I correct that to use this app one has to order the $4.99 SIM card that comes in the mail in order to get an American number to enjoy unlimited calling from Thailand 🇹🇭 to the United States 🇺🇸 ???
Answer summary
You do not need to order the $4.99 SIM card to use the app. TextNow, a VoIP service, can be used for free to get an American number as long as you have an internet connection. However, if you do not use the number by sending a message or making a call within 7 days, the number may be reclaimed.

No, you don't need the sim card to use it. Textnow is free, but you can pay for the upgraded version that removes ads and holds your number.
Textnow is a VIOP service, meaning it sends SMS and calls over the internet so as long as you have a data connection you can call or text anyone.
The downside to using the free version is if you don't send a text message or call in 7 days they take your number away.
