Question about South African National Passport with 2 month single entry visa. Can they purchase a multiple entry at Suvarnabhumi so that they can fly in and out as they please during the full 60 days? Will they be able to extend for another 30 days at Chang Wattana still?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A South African national with a 2-month single entry visa can purchase a re-entry permit at Suvarnabhumi Airport for multiple entries during their stay. It is advisable to enter Thailand, receive the 60-day stamp, then apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office before buying the re-entry permit. Alternatively, considering the 6-month Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) is recommended for extensive travel within Thailand.

Okay the answer about whether you can buy a re-entry permit at the airport or the immigration office on a single entry tourist visa is YES.

What I would do is have them fly in, get stamped in for 60 days, go to the immigration office apply for the 30 day extension and THEN buy the re-entry permit so that it's valid for the whole 90 days.

, Jomtien and I think one of the offices down on the islands in the south are the only two that routinely sends people away and tells them to come back when they have less than two weeks or less than a week (which is b/s).

Most all immigration offices are 30 days or less, but Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi (and a few more) are all 45 days or less.

Tod Daniels I have done it half way through so I can vouch for that. Technically speaking, they can be extended from day one. Many other Immigration offices such as Jomtien Pattaya use(d) to send people home telling them to come back to extend 7 days before expiry. If you say you have confirmed cases of people doing it from day one in Bangkok that's good info to have then for the future since I'm on SETVs myself.

@Lu**
, funny I have had people with just under 45 days go out and get extensions on tourist visas without a problem in section J

I've also had people fly in on 30 day visa exempt entries go directly from Don Mueang airport to Chaengwattana and apply in section K for a 30 day extension the day they arrived without a problem too :)

I guess our mileage varies :P

@Lu**
, all extensions are added to the current expiration date of their original stamp. SO if they came in, (waited the 2 weeks until they had 45 days or less left) went to the immigration office applied for a30 day extension they'd have close to 75 days of stay allowed. THEN if they bought the re-entry permit it'd be good for the entire 75 days.

45 days rule of thumb generally applies for annual non O retirement extensions. My understanding comes from the mouth of an Immigration officer at Chaengwatthana when I went to extend an SETV and asked her how early can I apply for an extension.

I didn't mention that you have to wait until you have 45 days or less left on the original stamp before you can get an extension at Chaengwattana, sorry. That's the soonest ANY immigration office will issue an extension.
Luke ******
Joshua - Because the reentry permit is valid until the last day of your permission of stay, so if you don't get the extension on day one, you will only cover 60 days with it.

@Lu**
, you don't have the understanding of chaengwattana that you think you do :/ You can apply for ANY extension of stay out there when you have 45 days or less left on your current stamp.

They person would have to burn 15 days of their 60 day stamp to get within 45 days or less so they could get an extension but they'd be fine

I understand what you mean, but I’m not understanding why it would make a difference as it doesn’t extend the visa
Luke ******
If Chaengwatthana is willing to extend so early. It is my understanding (and personal experience), that they may want to do so half way through the permission of stay (so after 30 days from arrival). Maybe with a valid reason (and this is one) they would extend immediately, but this is another thing to watch out for.

That’s a good idea, I’m afraid it might not work in this situation as it’s for a client and they will be given a temp work permit, I have a feeling this visa may prohibit Labour dept from issuing it.
