Do I need to open a bank account in the same city for a Thai 12-month extension on a Non-O visa?

Hi!

I have a 90 day non O visa.

Do I need to open the bank account in same city or area as the one I want to apply for the 12 month extension at?

Or would it work to open one account in Koh Samui, for example, so I can deposit funds for seasoning. Then when I get up to Chiang Mai later, open another acount in a branch there?

I am planning to base myself in Chiang Mai but considering spending time on the islands when I first arrive in Thailand. I want to get the account open + funds seasoning asap.

Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether they must open a bank account in the same city where they apply for a 12-month extension of their Non-O visa. They are considering opening an account in Koh Samui for seasoning funds, then moving to Chiang Mai later. Comments suggest that while opening a bank account in a different province is possible, it is advisable to do so in the same area where you will apply for your extension to simplify the process. Key advice includes obtaining a bank manager's letter for proof of funds, ensuring registration with immigration within 24 hours of arrival, and having a Thai mobile number.

Having just gone through this in the last two weeks I can confirm yes it can be very difficult based on location. Hopefully by the time you get here things may of settled down.

My advice is to seek advice from people with RECENT experience in the area you want to open an account.

Or

Use an agent. That’s probably the easiest solution and could be worth it when you’re on a timeline getting the 800K seasoned (visa type dependant of course)

Some great advice on this but it’ll only be relevant WHEN you arrive. It can get out of date pretty quickly at the moment.

Thanks. I land in Thailand 16 August. Have posted a question in a group on Koh Phangan, where I'm considering opening the first account, asking for people's recent experience 🙏

perfect. I hope it goes well. It took me three days and numerous branches. I got there in the end with Krungthai. Not the best bank but at least I’m set now. Just be patient. Some great advice on here.

Thank you. Well done for getting yours sorted. It's certainly an adventure! And yes, some useful input here.

You may already know, but its woth pointing out that whenever you withdraw funds outside of the province that your account is based in you will get charged a fee.

Thanks, yes. I see the comments of how to get around those bank fees using card-less withdrawal. But anyway I would have an account where I am living.

Having a bank account in one province and staying in another makes no sense whatsoever. It will eventually bite you in the ass.Of that I'm quite sure.There are also bank branches that won't issue for example a bank letter if you're not a customer.

I hear you. I would open an account in the province I live. So I may have accounts in more than 1 province.

@Sacha ************
That's a better decision.

Just remember that you have to go in person to Thai banks to make even there smallest request. So using a branch local to you can be important.

Yes, I will for sure have an account where I live 🙏

That is probably a good idea, with the Thai banking situation.

for the ease and streamlining of the application to the 1-year extension of stay, I recommend you stay in ONE and the SAME place

Are there people in hua hin that speak Thai that can help open a bank account? If so, who?
Frazer ******
@Tracey *******
I just recently opened up a bank account in Nonthaburi in a matter of minutes. The teller knew what was required and by coming prepared, there was no problem.
Peter *******
@Tracey *******
Yes loads of people in Hua Hin who speak Thai, try the agents in Soi 94.

@Tracey *******
yes people in hua hin speak Thai. It’s Thailand

if you read the comment properly I meant, because of what I've read, it's best to take a Thai person with you to properly translate, and who does this as a job, like an agent. I'm just the type of person that would like help as I get anxiety about doing things wrong. Not easy to make it understandable in a text what you actually mean. 😂

Follow up question, so if I opened up an account in Pattaya and now live in Korat would I be able to use a Korat branch for proof of funds?
Stephan ***********
@Hayes ******
I can tell for sure that it isn't a problem with Bangkok Bank, I just did it a week ago.

@Stephan **********
Thank you for Stephan, have been questioning this for a while.

Don’t make the process any more complicated as it already is

Once you have entered Thailand and move into an acommodation, you need to get registered by the TM30 Immigration system within 24 hours of your arrival in this accommodation

No Immigration office inside Thailand is going to do any service for you if you haven’t been properly registered to where you stay

If you enter on a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa and wish to open a Thai bank account, you need to be aware:

*** you need a certificate of residency from Immigration that explicitly states you need it for opening a bank account

*** you need a Thai mobile phone number

***you need to show that you entered Thailand on a Non-Imm visa type

Many bank clerks ask for much more. If bank clerks have no idea how to open bank accounts for foreigners, they will pull out of their noses a multitude of invented reasons

Thanks for the summary of what I need 🙏 And to be aware they may ask for more.

Just remember that you need a letter from your bank manager to certify the amounts held when you apply for the extension... These letters are only valid for 2 or3 days... so the branch needs to be close to your Immigration office...

@Ronald *****
Standard bank letter is normally valid for up to 7 days after it’s issued. Generally it’s anyway recommended to try to open a bank account in the area where you physically will stay, as you’ll have to pay a (small) fee for withdrawing in other districts.
Stuart ***********
@Jan *****************
I agree, but you can avoid the fees by using the cardless withdrawal option on the banking app instead of using the bank card (I never use my bank card).
Jan ******************
@Stuart **********
Thanks, didn’t know. I also always use the app to scan everything as QR-codes is King in Thailand now.

@Ronald *****
Thanks, yes. So if I open another account close to Immigration office, I should be fine?
Peter ********
@Sacha ************
Banks are run regionally so no guarantee of being able to open another account. Also extra out of region fees.

Nowadays, it's more about opening an account where you can. People are having such difficulty, that if you can find a bank that will do it, then do it.

@Brandon ***********
ok. So if I get the account open wherever, I can still apply for the extension in another jurisdiction?
Stuart ***********
@Sacha ************
I opened my account in Hua Hin, then a year later moved to Sriracha and the Bangkok bank there issued the statement and letter within about 10 minutes for me, so it's definitely possible. I have heard anecdotally that not all banks are as cooperative (I don't know if this is true).
