Hello and good day,

I need to convert my visa exempt entry into a non-immigrant "O" extension based on taking care of a Thai child. I've got all the bits required and, if I go to CW on Monday, I'll have enough time before my current stamp expires to apply.

Do I need to make an appointment or can I just turn up with all the documents and my child on Monday and queue up ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on converting their visa exempt entry into a non-immigrant "O" extension for caring for a Thai child. Commenters clarify that the user must first apply for a 90-day non-O visa before pursuing a 12-month extension. They note that it's generally acceptable to walk in for the visa application, but stress the need for sufficient days left on the current entry stamp and specify the correct immigration sections to visit.

as Graham correctly pointed out you FIRST need to apply for a 90 day non-O visa based on thai child for 2000baht

In Bangkok you need a minimum of 15 days left on your current entry stamp (visa exempt/tourist visa or a 30 day extension from one) and you go to Section C-1 <- they issue Non-Imm visas in country

You will apply, pay the 2000baht, get a receipt that has a date on it to come back in 2 weeks and then you go back to Section C-1 to get the Non-O visa and new 90 day stamp inked in

THEN you wait until you have 45 days or less left on that stamp go back out to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension for 1900baht. That will get a 21 day under consideration stamp, and on that date you go back to get the year inked in.

I'm stamped in until 25th September so I've got enough time, right?

did you already take a 30 day extension on this entry stamp? If not you can buy time by getting that for 1900baht at IT Square Laksi Plaza

No, I wanted to avoid that. The last time I had to do that, the queue was insane - was there virtually all day. It's a last resort in case my application is declined

@Bryce *******
and did you already go out to Chaengwattana and get the hand out listing the requirements from Section C-1 for the 90 day Non-O based on having legal parental rights of a thai child?

I ask because not having what you need is gonna run you off the rails faster than anything else out there, but as you said at least you can get that 30 day extension if you need it to buy you more time to get the documents corrected if you need too

The day you apply, show up early, section C-1 <- the visa issuing section is BUSY all day almost every day from open until way after they close at 4:30

Good luck with it, report back on how it goes if you can

I did not go out to CW to get the handout - I had hoped that someone uploaded one for Thai child extensions and visa as they've done for tourist, retirement and marriage visas. Haven't been able to find one though. But I've had several of these extensions before and know what they ask for

nothing personal
@Bryce *******
but this sounds like a slow motion train wreck in the making ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ™

If I were you, which I'm not I sure would take the time and effort to go get that handout so you can pull this off in one try,

Remember when you apply you have to have the child, (the mother if she's available) with you and if you miss it by a document, you're going to have to do it all over again

Plus you don't have the luxury of time, because you're not wanting to get that 30 day extension you have today, tomorrow, monday and tuesday to apply

I found them on the Bangkok Immigration site. Though, worryingly, they don't mention that the 400k has to be in the account for at least 30 days prior to application. I'm good in that regard but maybe they've left more stuff out. OK I'll head out there, thanks Tod

sincerely good luck with it

@Bryce *******
there is no requirement that the 400K baht be in the account any length of time to apply for the initial 90 day Non-O visa, it's just got to be in the account on the day you apply
Tod *********
@Bryce *******
you got until the 10th to apply on the stamp you have now because that's the last day you can apply and still have 15 days left on your current stamp

OK thanks

You need to convert first to a Non-O 90 day Visa before you can apply for the 12 month Extension of Stay

Yes I messed up the terminology.

It makes a change for someone to say extension when they mean Visa, it's always the reverse :)

If there's no appointments available, it's okay to walk in and take a number for your needed Thai visa.

Has anyone uploaded a copy of the documents required handout? I've gone through the media uploads on the group but can only find handouts for tourism, retirement and marriage to a thai woman.
