Land crossing Thailand/Laos. So far, all my exits/entries from Thailand have been by air. Next week I may want to cross the Mekong into Laos. Do I still have to pay 1000 baht for a re-entry permit to maintain my retirement visa? Thanks, Jack

TLDR : Answer Summary
When crossing the border from Thailand into Laos, you are required to obtain a re-entry permit to maintain the validity of your retirement visa. This applies regardless of whether you exit by air or land, and typically involves a fee of 1000 baht.

YES. You will need to get a reentry permit to keep your current extension of stay valid.

Can you get re-entry permits at land border, or is this a time you need to go to immigration before your trip?

Best to get the re-entry permit at local Thai immigration office.

Yes, to keep your Extension of Stay alive during a visit abroad, you need a re-entry permit. Leaving by air or land does not matter.
