Hello, I had a question for the group. In the process of deciding which visa to procure and was wondering about the restrictions on volunteering for the long-term retirement Visa. If I want to sing a song and she ain't right in public or teach kids how to read English books, is that going to be a problem on the retirement Visa? How about if I get the DTV and emphasize learning the Thai language?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Volunteering on a long-term retirement visa or a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand is legally restricted. Both visas prohibit work, and volunteering is often classified as work by Thai law. To volunteer legally, a work permit is required, which is not obtainable on these visa types. While some expats do pursue volunteer activities unofficially, this carries significant risks, including deportation if reported. It's advised to adhere strictly to the visa regulations to avoid complications.

That All depends on one’s definition of ‘volunteering’ and how much you formalize the activity

don’t do a volunteer visa

Thailand favors their own citizens and they should

You can’t have a huge number of retiree’s who would take the jobs of Thai people allowed into the country

So it would be a trade off as then they won’t allow such a large number retiree people to come in

I think a good option for Thailand would be to allow a work permit for retirees with limitations. There are lots of retirees with skills that could advance Thailand who could work on advisory basis. But not be full time employees.

They are missing on lots of potential training.

Volunteering visas scar yout record. In fact your can’t receive an Elie Visa. It could affect your chances to get other visas.

Yes you cannot volunteer on a retirement visa

Both a retirement visa and a DTV are work restricted for Thailand. That means you are not allowed to work in Thailand on either visa, and Thailand considers volunteering to be work. There are plenty of people that still do it, but just know the risks.

Generally on a retirement visa you cannot do anything. If you are interested in volunteering to help people, 9 times out of 10 you will have not problem. But if the wrong person sees this and takes the issue to Immigration, you would be in hot water. Best to follow the requirements of your visa to the letter. It is not worth taking the chance. I was once told by an immigration officer in Isaan, the only thing I can do on a retirement visa is help my wife with property she owns. For instance, I could help her work on her farm. That is the only exception.

You need a work permit to do these things legally. You won't get one on a DTV visa and neither will you get one on most retirement visas as they are work prohibited. I think you may be able to get one on the LTR Wealthy Pensioner visa though

If you are officially volunteering you need to have visa/permit. That's not quite the same if you do it 'unofficially'.

If you have your own money and paying your way like a good little expat nobody is going to look at you a second time if you are serving some public benefit. Where you get into problems is when you turn it into a real job.

Legally you can not get a work permit on any retirement visa extension, including to do volunteer work, and it is required. There are a number that do, and a small percentage of them get caught doing it, usually from a police complaint, then they are deported in lots of cases, and barred from returning for no more than ten years, with marriage having little influence. Most don't get caught, so it's at your own risk if you're one that does get caught.

You need to get a permit to volunteer. I don’t know how that would affect a retirement Visa which you can not work on.
