TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, it is officially required to have a work permit for any form of work, including volunteer positions. While some individuals choose to volunteer on a tourist visa without a permit, this is technically illegal. The safest option for volunteering is to obtain a Non-Immigrant O visa specifically for volunteer work, along with the necessary work permit. Though enforcement can vary, engaging in unpaid volunteer work on a tourist visa may lead to legal complications.

Okay, people volunteer all the time without any adverse effects BUT the real rule is whether it's paid or unpaid volunteering requires the proper visa and work permit.

I think the O/P can make an educated decision on what they want to do
Robert *******
Official by law, yes , the Non Immigrant O visa based on Volunteer and the Work Permit for Volunteer. Benefit is that you also get insurance in case of, as you know more and more areas in Thailand get the red zone rabies reports. But as on many things law enforcement is low. Don't believe the I hear stories, best example is I heard my good friend got arrested with a SWAT team fully armed, using explosives to blow out the door because he cooked his own breakfast and made a cup of coffee in his own house. He took away two jobs, one as cook and one as waitress by doing it all himself without a work permit and the appropriate Visa. He went to court and got sentenced to life in jail, than he woke up from this bad dream and prepared his breakfast without problems.
Jinky *******
Be careful, thats illigal. You will get arrested working here without permit

Technically and stricktly by law you need a Work Permit. Even the volunteers after the Tsunami needed one.

I'm hoping Soi Dog collects strays and has them vaccinated, tested for rabies and has them spayed or neutered and not just feeds them so they can make more stray dogs.

Technically you need one but I wouldn't bother getting one if you're only around for a short time

joke--"short time" has other connotations

on a tourist visa? Probably :)

Seems a bit counter intuitive. Volunteering to do something is not work when it is free. If you see trash on the road and want to pick it up you are volunteering to do so. Working involves making money. If no money is involved, what's the problem?
Jason *******
@Luke *******
I would not do it again. Too many problems in thailand. Happy to get out.
Luke ******
Jason Stone I'm not telling you what to do, i'm advising people that there is a risk to that particular structure, as long as they are comfortable with the risk of losing what they don't really own, they can go ahead with it. Yes, people made profits with this structure.

It does not affect you anymore though, as you said you're out.
Jason *******
@Luke *******
you dont need to tell me mate. Like I said I had houses in companies there before and have sold up. I am so happy to be out.
Kevin ********
You are then taking a job away from a Thai national.

Now, if the job of picking up the trash was ever going to be done or not is a different question and. It relevant.
Luke ******
Jason Stone companies that have a structure of minimum 51% thai spread around people that don't know each other and have presigned their resignation letters, which is something they are aware of already, and has been cracked down in some cases.

There is a real possibility to encounter issues nowadays with this structure.
Jason *******
@Phil ******
companies but that is off topic. I did ok with no probs.

@Ja***
who owned the land the houses were on?

Condos can only be owned when the block is majority Thai iwned
Alex *********
I heard of a German man being prosecuted for painting fence on his house without work permit
Jason *******
@Phil ******
yes but I did own 3 houses and a condo when I lived there. I sold up and moved on 5 years ago.
Alex *********
I think it's crazy to require work permit for volunteering, but this is Thailand , so don't expect anything logical
Phil *******
@Ja***
also with property ownership.
Jason *******
I agree we in uk should be more like thailand

Thai logic

Many things are counter intuitive in Thailand.
Jason *******
I remember some people getting in trouble volenteering in the clean up after the tsunami
Phil *******
You need a work permit even to do voluntary work.
Stéfan ********
Officially, you need a work permit to do this kind of work. But this is Thailand, for lack of better words, who knows. Some people actually pay to teach here and there are agencies that are built on a pay to volunteer model and officials turn a blind eye. I'll take a wild guess and say that if you pay anything to do this, then you're probably fine.
Luke ******
Volunteering requires a work permit, and you cannot get a work permit while on a tourist visa, you would need a non immigrant type O visa.
Luke ******
Phil Bliss No you don't have to extend. Unless you apply too late and need more time for the actual process.The conversion from a tourist visa to a non O visa costs 2,000 baht. Visas don't just transform themselves.
David **********
Totally different situation. Those people are CHANGING their visa, not just extending a tourist visa.
Phil *******
Not so sure, if you want a marriage or retirement extension to a tourist visa you first have to extend I.
David **********
@Phil ******
absolutely wrong. Just an extension of stay on tourist visa.
Luke ******
@Phil ******
😁 you are joking I believe
Phil *******
I think I am right in saying that if you extend your 2 month tourist visa with a one month extension it then becomes a type O
Clint *********
ANY work conducted in Thailand weather its a real job or volunteering requires a work permit. They have specific ones for volunteers
Dylan ********
I think technically illegal. Will you have a problem, probably not. I'd assume immigration have better things to do with their time.
