ORIGINAL POSTER
If you have a retirement visa and 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account and decide to leave Thailand permanently, can I easily transfer that 800,000 baht back to my bank account in Belgium? I've heard it's not easy. Does anyone have experience with this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the ease of transferring 800,000 baht from a Thai bank account back to Belgium upon leaving Thailand permanently on a retirement visa. Key points include the need for proof of the source of funds, the possibility of using DEEMONEY for transfers (limited to 500,000 THB per transaction), and the option for direct SWIFT transfers. Participants also suggest alternatives such as withdrawing cash or using money changers, highlighting that navigating banking options can be complex.

Yes, if you have an account with Bangkok Bank, go to your branch and request access to use Western Union through Bangkok Bank mobile app. As a backup, you can also go to Central shopping center and sign up Western Union there. You will need to be able to have SMS sent to your phone to use Central's Western Union account.

Can you just go in and close the account and get cash to leave?

In today’s world where money needs to be traceable, it would be easiest i the money is going back to the same account they were transferred from, to Thailand.

Just go bank draw the cash out

Probably easier and more economical to just start using the money and let it run down itself to a more manageable amount to transfer

There's other ways to offload 800k baht. Bank transfer costs a fee plus poor exchange rate. If I had 800k baht to get rid of I'd start spending it, and doing private exchanges amongst other expats

I doubt that. For an inner-Thailand transfer, with a business/commercial account, YES. But not a foreign SWIFT transfer and definitely not from a private savings account

wrong, while you can set the currency deposit in your WISE account to Thai Baht, or $U.S. or Euro or Swiss Francs, it doesn't make your WISE account a "Thai Bank Account" 😂😂😂😂😂 you are very funny

I don't see an option in Wise to transfer THB from a Thai bank account, though maybe you could draw it from a Thai debit card.

you set the currency accounts up. Dollar, baht, GBP etc. You then buy/convert GBP from your baht account. Go to your GBP account and then transfer it to whichever bank account(s) you have setup with Wise. I have multiple bank accounts and multiple currency accounts. Very easy to do.

after creating a Baht account on Wise, when I try to add Baht to the account the menu shown below comes up. One of the options that you need to select is what currency to pay in (to use to fund the account) and THB is not one of the choices. It seems like Wise will only allow you to fund THB account by exchanging from another currency.

I lost track of the OP country, but I would not take large amount of cash to the United States. They can take it under civil forfeiture , claim you are a drug dealer or or money launderer and you are unlikely to get it back. Many stories about this.

maybe that would be a risk if you were carrying a briefcase full of cash when entering the country but there's no risk in a US citizen wiring money into an established account in the US.

not if you declare it upon entry, and have some proof the money was used in a Thai bank account for the applications to Extensions of Stay in Thailand. Absolutely no problem

Marc MQ you can use DEEMONEY for that but you will have to visit your bank branch, because your banking App doesn't allow moving of such a high amount like 800,000 THB. DEEMONEY has a limit of 500,000 THB for a single transfer, so you will have to send 800,000 THB in two transfers

you can also make a direct foreign SWIFT transfer from your Thai bank to your British bank. If the Thai bank doesn't have any objections, they will and can do it. Requirement is that they are able to see in your banking history, that all the money had been sent to your Thai bank account from abroad

there is another option. You take the 800,000 THB out in cash Thai Baht. Then visit Superrich or SiamExchange in Bangkok or any reliable money changer and order from them GPB equivalent to 800,000 THB. You can take out unlimited foreign currency out of Thailand. Amounts over 15,000 USD must be declared at Thai Customs. You are NOT allowed to take more than 50,000 Thai Baht out of Thailand - beware! Third alternative: ask your Thai bank to exchange into GBP, and take the GBP out of Thailand in cash

Why doing it so complicated? If you really need to repatriate for example 800k baht from Bangkok Bank, you can simply go to your branch and get it done.

the maximum amount you can send with DEEMONEY is 500,000 THB. You need to do this over the counter of your Thai bank, as the App won't allow it. In order to transfer 800,000 THB back to your British bank account, you need to do two transfers.

I am about to try to do the same, just waiting a little bit till the exchange rate becomes a bit better again. It seems that doing it via Wise is the best (Bangkok Bank - > Wise -> My Swiss Bank), as they have the lowest fees (?) and the best exchange rate (?)... To be seen....

Bank to bank swift transfers are possible via for example Bangkok Banks mobile banking. But I guess there's a transfer limit and the bank wants you to go the branch.

As long as the bank can see where the money originally came from, and if that was from outside of Thailand, it should be fine.

I wouldn’t be so sure. A few years ago I wanted to wire like a hundred baht abroad to activate a dormant account and Kasikorn asked for a bunch of documents 😂 so I didn’t bother

Maybe that was just bad luck or something like that. Haven’t tried after that
