What is the process for switching from an O-A to an O Retirement visa in Thailand?

I am planning on switching from my current O-A to a O Retirement visa and would just like to confirm the process.

My plan is to leave Thailand without a Re-Entry permit so when I return I would be issued a 45 day tourist visa on arrival.

After 25 days or so I would then apply for the O visa.

I already have the ฿800k balance in the bank.

Is this plan correct?

Any advice would be appreciated

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is looking to switch from an O-A visa to an O Retirement visa. They plan to leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, intending to return and apply for an O visa after receiving a 45-day tourist visa upon arrival. Forum responses confirm that while the user's plan is mostly correct, they mistakenly referred to a '45-day tourist visa on arrival' instead of a 'visa exempt entry stamp.' Additionally, it is noted that there's no need to wait 25 days before applying for the O visa; instead, the application should be scheduled within the time required for processing.

Other than your terminology mix up (there is no 45 day tourist visa on arrival 😮 ) you'd be comin' in on what's called a "visa exempt entry stamp" <- just a free entry stamp (for 45 days as long as you enter on or before Mar 31st)

There's no need to wait the 25 days to apply for the initial 90 day Non-O visa, you need a minimum amount of days (depending on the office you use) to cover the under review period (between 15 and 20 days)

Sounds like a good workable plan, you'll apply, pay the 2000baht, get the receipt that says when to return, on that date you show up, they stamp the Non-O visa and new 90 day stamp into your passport. Then you wait until you have 30 days or less left on that new 90 day stamp and apply for the year extension for 1900baht

yep, many MANY people are getting off their OA visas (because of the prohibitively high insurance premiums with the new mandatory coverage of 100K USD) to get O visas

Should have no issues, just check with your immigration office to find out how many days the initial 90 day Non-O application goes under review because you need that amount of time PLUS 1 days to apply 🙂

I’m going through the same process in Chiang Mai. I just got back on visa exempt, is there a minimum waiting period before I can apply for the non-O? Also, do I need full banking details for the initial application (I already have 800k in the bank for the required period)?

@John *******
you need to have a minimum of 15 WORKING days left on your current stamp to apply for an in country Non-O at Chiang Mai immigrations, (so leave at least 21 calendar days usually)

you need to have the bank letter, update the bank book and all the rest of the documentation that they have listed on the wall in the main immigration office by the airport. (there is no required period of time to have the 800k baht in the bank for the initial 90 day Non-O. That 2 month seasoning is for the year extension)

Plus the initial 800,000 baht for the O visa doesnt have to show where it came from , right Todd ? for Davids post ?

In Chiang Mai they do not require proof of funds origin to get the initial 90 day non-O visa, in Bangkok they do and you must show it was transferred in from abroad.

Weird but you do know the rules around the country . As they say T.I.T 🙂

@Jay **********
