TLDR : Answer Summary
The transition from a work permit to a tourist visa depends on your current immigration status in Thailand. If your work permit has been canceled, you may have overstayed your allowed stay, incurring daily fines. It is crucial to be aware of the regulations regarding overstaying, as penalties increase significantly the longer you remain without a valid visa.

And to make it easy: IF you did made 90 days reports it simply means that the day your work permit is cancelled your Permitted to stay period ended that same day. You were only allowed to be inside Thailand to work. You are now in overstay of the visa rules, at 500 Thb a day with a maximum of 20.000 Thb if you report yourself with less than 90 days overstay, if you get caught or have more than 90 days overstay a different ball game starts. There is NO 21 days leniency or what ever your lawyer tried to tell you.

It all depends on your current stay inside the country. a Work Permit is just a booklet that let you work at the company mentioned inside.

You go with a letter from your employer to the Ministry of Labor in your area, cancel the work permit. With documentation of this cancellation and another copy of the letter from your employer you visit the Immigration Office in your area and cancel your Extension of Stay. Both need to be cancelled on the last day of working and can be done in advance, so you can make travel plans to leave the country on your last day of working.

Okay so you do not have a visa. That change the whole story.

I haven't left the country once I have only had to report to immigration every 90 days, just want to make sure I'm not gonna have any problems at the boarder

That means every 90 days you left Thailand and applied for a new Non Immigrant B visa at a Thai consulate and got 90 days of stay when you entered. In that case you can just stay inside Thailand till the date mentioned in the small stamp Admitted until and after that apply for a Tourist Visa.
