TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the challenges and risks associated with purchasing a vehicle in Thailand that lacks a green book, particularly one that has been pawned or forfeited. Key points include the necessity of the green book for legal ownership, potential scams in the vehicle market, and the financial implications of buying such vehicles. Participants strongly advise against purchasing any vehicle without the official documentation, warning that outstanding debts and previous ownership claims might complicate or invalidate ownership.

And for any of you out there, yes you can have a car here in your name :-)

Not only do you need a green/blue book you need to check all previous tax has been paid as your liable

Do not under any circumstances buy any vehicle without the book in hand. Walk away. The book is the collateral for finance, gambling debts, loan sharks etc and Thais are professionals in lying as to its whereabouts.

Haha just stating facts, Thais will happily cheat Thais when it comes to cars and money so farang have got no chance. And yes I live in Thailand happily married to a Thai.

It doesn't have a greenbook because there is outstanding finance. I was offered a merc almost brand new for a fraction of cost. Had a photocopy of green book which was enough to get tax, but at anypoint the finance Boys can get it back, and they are very good at their jobs. you can put false plates but changing a Vin number is impossible.

Ita deal sounds too good to be true, then it is probably not true. Doubly so if it's in another language or culture.

There is currently a big scam going around where people are selling rented cars, claiming they are refinanced or have been seized, then a few months later the real owner shows up. You cannot own a car without the green book, do not buy it until your name is on there. Cars have to have a green book.

That's blue for cars.

Is that something the pawn company has to do? If I bought the bike could I do that myself with the forfeiture paperwork?

probably but it's going to be a hassle. I bought a motorbike at auction and got it straight away. Normally "finance" companies receive the book over assets, I might suggest your "finance" company may be less than legit.
