I am a US citizen in Phuket on a tourist visa that expires on March 3rd.
I want to go to Penang Malaysia for a quick weekend trip on February 3rd - 4th, then return to Phuket, then return to the US on February 16th. Going to Malaysia is not a typical border run - I actually want to go there for a visit.
My expectation is that when I arrive back at the Phuket airport from Malaysia, I would be stamped in on 30-day visa exempt.
I understand that you can't predict what immigration officers will do, but do you see anything in this plan such that I might not be allowed back into Phuket from Malaysia?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen in Phuket plans to travel to Penang, Malaysia for a weekend trip and is concerned about re-entering Phuket. The traveler expects to receive a 30-day visa exemption upon return from Malaysia and asks if there are any issues with this plan. A comment reassures them that the travel plans seem fine, but suggests having a copy of their return flight tickets to the US for any potential questions at immigration.
