Can I open a Bangkok Bank account with a Non-B visa before getting my work permit?

Hi everyone, I recently received a job offer from a company in Bangkok. They have asked me to enter Thailand on a Non-Immigrant B (Employment) visa, and they will provide all the required documents for my visa application.

The company also asked me to open a Bangkok Bank account because their payroll is processed through Bangkok Bank, so my salary would be paid into that account.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Can I open a Bangkok Bank account with a Non-B visa (Employment) before receiving my work permit?

2. If yes, what documents are typically required?

3. Or do I need to wait until I have my work permit and my visa has been extended to a one-year stay before I can open a bank account?

I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has gone through this process recently could share their experience. Thanks in advance!
Answer summary
The post discusses whether an individual can open a Bangkok Bank account with a Non-Immigrant B (Employment) visa prior to receiving their work permit. Responses from the community suggest mixed experiences; while some individuals were able to open an account using only the Non-B visa, others reported needing the work permit and extension of stay to do so. It's generally advised to seek assistance from the employer and to contact Bangkok Bank directly for specific requirements.

I've tried with the Non-b only on Kbank and they did not let me, I had to wait for the work permit

When I did years ago I got a tourist Visa ans then went to Laos and got the Non B. The company then got my work permit. Banking was easy then. Just needed a lease.

Let your company's HR peeps help with the bank account: they have the relationship with the bank (branch) so when they snap their fingers then the bank jumps into action.

Yes and you need to wait for your work permit is issued you will need to ask your chosen bank If a resident certificate is also needed in addition to your work permit, given addresses are no longer on the work permit

Last time I opened an account some years back only needed your passport and work permit

Of your employer is any good, they should help you with opening the bank account, especially if it's at the employer's branch. No need for a WP for a bank account.

In any case, wait until you're here before worrying about the bank account.

Henry Durrant yes you do need a WP... My employer assisted me many years ago but I still needed my work permit and EOS first before it could be opened

Paul Anthony McDermott OK. Everyone has different experiences. I arrived in Thailand on a Non-B, opened the bank account (with the assistance of my employer) but didn't get my WP for another few months.

My recent experience asking several banks to open account was. Retirement or Marriage visa or work permit. So I expect you will need the work permit and not just the non Immi B

You only need the non b to open an account at BB.

John Foose mppe you will need a work permit and extension of stay

These days for employment it's only a Single entry Non-imm B they give you valid for 90 days...

In that 90 days you need to get your work permit and your annual extension of stay issued

Contact Bangkok Bank main office in Silom. This will be the branch for foreigners to open accounts. They will answer all the questions.

I did but it was few years ago. Normally you can with a non-B. You should also be able to choose your bank. Bangkok Bank is very restrictive with foreigners

Bank account opening process is not that easy nowadays in B

angkok. But some agent do it with charges if you are hurry. You better check.

You can enter to Bangkok with Non B visa and after that you need medical certificate and they will apply for work permit.I think with this work permit, and apartment rental contract you can open bank account. It might take time.

MemorableRaccoon6218 nope the fact they are sending him the documents externally to apply for the B means they have already applied for his work permit and have sent the WP-3 document

Also medicals are not mandatory for work permits now it depends on who is applying.. Ie if done through BOI and the immigration one stop.. Medical certificate is no longer required

He will not be able to open his account until he has his work permit and extension of stay for employment in his hand

With that.. He will be able to open a bank account same day.. His reasons are legitimate..

I personally don’t know much about this visa but if a company has offered you a job I’m pretty sure it’s down or normally sort the visa for you or they would submit the documents for you to go to the thai embassy in your own country for your passport to stamp your visa once you’ve got your Visa, you can open account upon your entry with your Visa , but you should check if the company is legit , your best check with a agent that is expert in this field

But they can send it to the thai embassy in your own country, I believe that’s what happened to my cousin did when he worked over here , the company did all of it for him, all he did was to submit his passport, he came over first and his family came after, if I remember he gave the passport to the company and they did it all ,

Admittedly, the company was based all over the world and at the time he was still working in the UK and they have a place in Thailand America and so on, so that was a little bit differently supposedly ,

So maybe in this case when he arrives here, get the paperwork go to immigration do the Visa so then he then can go open the bank account maybe how this process works on this occasion

Kevin Hunt they do.. They send you the paperwork you directly to submit it to your local email embassy or Consulate and go and pick your PP up when visa is approved

It's Standard practice.. As they can't apply without your physical passport and if you are in a different country they don't have your physical passport

Kevin Hunt exactly if there that set on having him work for them they should take care of all the paperwork needed as well as the costs involved. I did this twice here in Thailand The company took care of all the paperwork and the costs in both situations. If they're not willing to do that I would question their willingness to have him work

You can't work until you have a work permit so it would be unusual to be paid before you actually start work

- lol, no. It often takes quite a while, so just being in the application process is just fine in practice.

yes, but not unusual (although illegal) to start work before the permit is issued.

i don’t know if it’s a school, but if it is, at least they aren’t telling him to do border runs while they lie and say the person who does the paperwork for visas and work permits isn’t in that day.
