Hi all. Canadian here but a Singapore resident. Did a few back to back visa exempts + renewals + had 1 non immigrant b last year. This is a new calendar year and have done 1 now. Is it OK to fly out and in again. I had been planning to extend at immigration on my last day tmrw but office is closed then apply for a retirement visa. Does a new calendar year wipe out last years visa exempts. Not really wanting to do a land crossing. Thanks in advance..:)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian resident in Singapore is inquiring about the possibility of flying in and out of Thailand after utilizing multiple visa exemptions and a non-immigrant B visa within the past year. They are uncertain whether a new calendar year resets exemption rules and whether leaving the country followed by re-entry would be feasible. Community responses clarify that visa exemption rules, particularly for air entry, are not as permissive as for land entries and that the individual can apply for a retirement visa upon their return.

Here's my opinion:

1. You need to leave tomorrow, to avoid being on overstay.

2. When you return to Singapore:

a. Identify what type of Non-O "retirement visa" you want. There are many.

b. Once you identfied the visa you want, apply for it. The Singapore system is online, and also allows people who are NOT from Singapore to use the system. See

for more information about how to apply.

3. If you want the visa from inside Thailand, re-enter Thailand by land, and apply at your local immigration office. You can enter twice, by land, and on each entry you get 30 days, which can be extended by another 30. Chose the border carefully.

So why do I keep hearing 180 days in a calendar year? This is a new calendar year and only 1 one month visa has been issued. Am confused..

there is no such rule. But if Immigration Officer thinks you are staying in Thailand too long...denied entry

Because those are rumors that don't have any connection to reality.

you can apply for a "conversion" from an exempt entry to a 90-days Single Entry Non-Imm-O based on being over 50, on Immigration Office inside Thailand. In the last 30 days you can apply for the 1-year extension of Stay based on being over 50, if you meet all requirements (financial & TM30, documents etc) All on the assumption you are a Canadian with a Canadian passport who just happens to reside in Singapur. You could ask, however, the Thai Embassy in Singapore if you can apply for a Non-Imm-O with them, maybe your "resident" documentation will be accepted

Are tourist visas allotted based on how many visa exempts you ve had historically or do they reference them in each calendar year?

Thanks all for your replies but somehow i m still confused and as i dont have the time or inclination to do a last minute land crossing i will fly to Sg tmrw due to it being day 30 of my visa exempt ( innigration will be closed) and hope i get in again to do retirement visa. While in Sg I ll first see if i can apply for a non O.

no, you still can do another entry by land this year (if this would be the second entry by land) and an unlimited (not really but some) by air. Why don't take time when you are in Singapore to get a Single Entry Tourist visa, it would give you 60 days plus 30 days by an extension for 1900 THB and can also be converted to a Non-Imm-O based on being over 50

So from Pattaya what is the most painless land border run and can anyone recommend a decent accomodation- mid range if the question is appropriate?

yes you are correct on all assumptions; however my last day of my 30 day exempt visa is tmrw and offices are closed.

No...your history is yours. However you are allowed two land border entries per calendar year. Each gives you 30 days to most people. Which can be extended 30 days at Thai Immigration 1,900 Thai baht fee each time.

>" Is it OK to fly out and in again."

No, the "two entries without a visa" reset only for land entries, not air. You can try flying in, but you run the risk of rejection.

>" Does a new calendar year wipe out last years visa exempts."

Only by land. When you say you are a "Singapore resident", does that mean you're a citizen with a passport?
