Tourist visa extension hypothetical:

Okay so here’s the situation:

I have an American passport and I arrived in Thailand on a 60 day visa stay September 1st. I decided to extend it 30 more days until the end of November.

Initially I was looking to go to Vietnam for a few months then come back, thinking that we can only stay 3 months out of every 6 (calendar year?) months.

After talking to others, I’ve gotten more information and I’d like some input/correction: given my stay history, can I (instead of flying out to Vietnam), take a bus to Laos for a few days, and then come right back for 30 more days…and then even possibly extend again for 30 more at the immigration office?

I know this is *really* working the tourist visa, but come spring, I plan to have a long term visa. So until then I’m exploring ways in which (if any) I can expand my time as much as possible as I continue to make more connections with the community here.

I would appreciate any input/advice!

The new rules for land entry vs entry by aircraft are different. You need to carefully read them on the official Thai government WEB site. Additionally at any entry it is up to the immigration officer to allow or deny entry. "Working' vs "Abusing" the system is more than a matter of systematics. And again entry or denial can come down to what mood the immigration officer is in that day. Even with a new visa. A visa does not guarantee entry.

You sound like quite the piece of work yourself ! The Vietnamese, the Laotians and others have no need for nitpickers or manipulators like you.

If you use a visa agency to do boarder runs you can be guaranteed entry. I did a few boarder runs before I got my retirement visa and never was turned away.

I would go to Laos or Vietnam and apply for a 60 day tourist visa.

They can count your entries & you might get denied entry at some point

Guess you are living in Thailand with not the accurate Visa.

You can try, but officers are not stupid and you need a good argumentation; maybe you pass it.

That’s a perfect way to get denied just go to Vietnam and apply for a new evisa (TV) this will improve your chances as you’ve had an extension so that may prevent a second especially on a exempt stamp

There is no official rule specifying the total number of days one is permitted to spend in Thailand on touristic entries within a one-year period or a calendar year.

Thai immigration authorities follow a specific approach designed to prevent the misuse of consecutive tourist visas and visa-exempt entries for long-term stays.

An immigration officer will examine an individual’s entry history over the preceding 12 to 18 months.

They do not look at the calendar year, as that would be illogical; instead, they calculate the total number of days spent in Thailand within a 1-year timeframe.

Anyone who has already reached—or, upon their next entry, would exceed—an (unofficial) threshold of 150 to 180 days within a 1-year period, will almost certainly get pulled aside, questioned about their intentions, and issued a warning.

Such a warning is typically accompanied by an indication that one’s personal limit has been reached, with the instruction that, for future visits, one must apply for a visa that fits the purpose of the stay— and rather than just another tourist visa.

Tourist visas are intended exclusively for tourism and short vacations.

Then there is the issue: an individual who remains in Thailand for more than 180 days within a calendar year, becomes a tax-resident. At this point, they are no longer considered a typical tourist.

It is worth noting that online forums often suggest it is possible to stay for up to nine months using a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV).

This no longer appears to be a tolerated practice, as there have been reports of individuals on such visas being warned once they surpassed the six-month mark.

In any case, anyone wishing to stay in Thailand for longer than 6 months within a 1-year period should obtain an appropriate LONG-TERM stay permit.

These include the Elite-Privilege Visa, Education visas, Monkhood visas, Volunteer visas, Non-Imm-O, Non-Imm-OX, and Non-Imm-O/A visa categories, as well as the LTR and DTV visas.

It's not possible to give you advice on this without more information. How much time have you spent in Thailand in the past 12 to 18 months? When you enter Thailand the immigration officer looks at your history over that period and makes a decision based on the amount of time spent in Thailand, once your up to around 150 days you can expect problems trying to enter on a tourist stamp.

On the off chance you have no prior history other than your current 90 day stay you should be fine going to Laos and returning to get a 30 day visa exempt stamp but you may only get a 7 day extension to that

So long you do not hit the 150 day mark he probably get the full 30 day visa exempt extension The 7 day extension mostly is for the 150 a 180 day range. But like always you are up to the IO. I know lawfully the 180 day mark is par calendar year, but most IO use a rolling 12-month period, where it is more logical it is a calendar year because of the tax laws

there's no law about 180 days nor per calendar year

Ronny Liekens it makes you a tax resident (not a resident) which has no Immigration implications

You are right there, i mixed up with the Section 41 of the Thai Revenue Code, spending 180 days or more in Thailand within a single calendar year makes you a Thai tax resident. Logically I think you should watch with this rule the time that you can stay in Thailand, because surpassing it would make you a resident and not a tourist. Where in a rolling year you could not surpass that.
