I'm in Chiang Mai and will be making my first run to the border soon. I was planning on going to the nearest border. Would I be able to apply for a tourist visa there (or online) or can I only do that in Ventiane? Also if there is any advice for how to do it (book with a company or just take a bus there and back...) I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user in Chiang Mai is inquiring about the possibility of applying for a tourist visa at the nearest border crossing instead of traveling to Vientiane. The comments clarify that Myanmar land borders are currently closed, and that to obtain a Single Entry Tourist Visa, one must go to the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane or the Consulate-General in Savannakhet, as border runs only offer a free stamp for citizens of visa-exempt countries. There are suggestions to refer to local expat groups for travel advice.
