Hi there,

A tax question. Does the TDV allow you to request a tax ID number? I would think so, but would like to be sure. Also, what kind of rental contract is needed to request this tax ID? Is a 6-month contract enough?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, holders of a DTV visa are allowed to apply for a Thai tax ID number (TIN), provided they qualify based on income types recognized by the Thai Revenue Department. The documentation required may vary by province and the local Revenue Department office, so it's advisable to inquire directly with them for specific requirements. A 6-month rental contract is generally viewed as sufficient for obtaining a TIN, but the exact requirements may depend on your income type and the documentation standards in your area.

Requesting a TIN is irrelevant to your visa status. You qualify to obtain a TIN if you have assessable income under the Thai Revenue Department rules.

same question here. If you have assessable income. How should i ‘prove’ this? I cannot prove that i want to send money into Thailand (remittance) when i haven’t sent it yet.

you don’t prove anything. You need your passport and proof of address to get a TIN from your local revenue office. It’s a free service, I was in and out in 10mins.

you don't have to prove anything, maybe except of your address (rental agreement is enough). TIN is a very basic document without any magic function itself. It's just a number you'll use to identify yourself on the proper tax documents.

They just asked me if I brought any money into Thailand. I said yes and they gave me TIN. That's all.

Yes, DTV visa holders are allowed to apply for a Thai tax ID number, but you must qualify. Thailand recognizes 8 different types of income, and the supporting documents you need to prepare will depend on which type of income applies to you.

There isn’t one fixed checklist that works everywhere—requirements can vary by province and even by the local Revenue Department office.

The best way to be sure is to contact the Revenue Department office in the area where you live and ask directly what documents they require. That way, you’ll get the exact list for your situation. Good luck!

thank you. what if i want to sent an invoice to a client? What is there to prove? I dont use contacts with my cliënts.

Alternatvely, what if i want to bring money into Thailand, which us taxable. How to prove i want to send money? It sound all a bit ridiculous to ‘proof’ all of these things. Won’t they just provide number when i ask them? Thats how it works just about anywhere in the world.

Just keep filing taxes at the source country where your money is originally being made. Thailand has a double tax agreement anyway. And likely the staff at the revenue office don't want to deal with the extra admin work setting you up with a tax ID

that's completely wrong. You have to fill tax documents in both countries. You can just pay less in Thailand, thanks to the DTA. But you still have to fill the form, even if you won't pay a cent.

no, it's not like it works anywhere in the world. You need to have income in the country (or remitted to the country) to actually be able to get a tax ID in most countries around the world. Here's the same.

i am not familiar with the remittance system. A remittance is simply me sending money from my foreign bank account to my thai bank account (or take it cash if i dont have a bank account, i assume). What is there to proof? I dont get the concept.

Edit: from what i read online is that it is possible to get a tax id based on your address registration with a long term rental contract. That would make sense. Can anyone confirm?
