Has anyone transferred a DTV to a new passport of a different nationality?

My daughter was originally issued a DTV under her Ethiopian passport as an infant (via the Thai Consulate in Nairobi). Her CRBA has since been processed, so she is now a US citizen and had to surrender her Ethiopian passport.

Will her new US passport automatically "inherit" her valid DTV (with stamp/documentation transfer), or do we need to submit a completely new DTV application?

Neither the DC consulate nor the Nairobi consulate are responding to emails/calls, and Thai Immigration in Bangkok told us this must be handled through a consulate. Has anyone dealt with a similar dual-nationality/passport switch for the DTV?
Answer summary
Transferring a DTV (Dependent Visa) from an Ethiopian passport to a new US passport is not feasible because the visa is tied to both nationality and passport number. Since the Ethiopian passport has been surrendered due to acquiring US citizenship, a new DTV application must be submitted under the US passport. Essential documents for the new application include the US passport bio page, CRBA, letter explaining the previous DTV, and all requisite dependent documents. Thai embassies typically do not transfer visas to different nationalities.

This is a different situation from the normal "I got a new passport same nationality" case - because the nationality changed and the old passport was surrendered.

For normal same-nationality renewal, rule is:

*DTV can NOT be transferred to a new passport.* You carry both passports for 5 years - old passport with the sticker or eVisa PDF that shows the old number, plus new passport where they put the entry stamp. Immigration in Thailand will not transfer a DTV visa, they only transfer extensions of stay issued inside Thailand. a011

Your daughter's case breaks that rule because:

1. The DTV is linked to a passport number AND a nationality in the MFA eVisa system. An Ethiopian passport number with a US nationality does not match.

2. You no longer have the old Ethiopian passport to show at the border. Officers in Bangkok and at airports ask to see the physical old passport with that number - a copy is not accepted when the nationality is different.

3. Ethiopian law requires surrender on acquiring US citizenship via CRBA, so you cannot legally present it as valid. 25d9

Immigration Bangkok is correct - this has to be solved by a consulate, and in this scenario that means *new DTV application under her US passport*.

What to submit for the new application:

- New US passport bio page

- Her CRBA and US birth abroad documentation

- Letter explaining previous Ethiopian passport number XXX issued DTV via Nairobi on date Y, now surrendered due to US citizenship acquisition, include surrender certificate if you have it

- Previous DTV approval PDF / sticker copy

- All standard DTV dependent documents again - birth certificate showing parent relationship, your own valid DTV as main holder if she is your dependent

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Thai embassies just don't transfer visa to another passport.

If the other passport is another nationality the visa in the old passport is not even valid when you bring the old and the new passport, because you have to enter on the same nationality as you got the visa issued for.

In Thailand, any visa is just valid for the nationality you applied under (included PR). You need to submit a new application. For information young kids do not get fined or banned for overstay

Children under 15 do not need a visa. Are not fined and are not barred from the country for reentry.

are you sure b/c we had a DTV & they asked for a visa for our infant daughter at that time as she had an Ethiopian passport thus not exempt but she had a DTV so it was all good.

From what I understand, children under 15 are only exempt from overstay fines but they will still get the “overstay” stamp on their passports.

Anonymous participant they can enter visa exempt on a US passport. There's no fine for overstay under the age of 15 but they will get an overstay stamp as you say

That said - don't believe 100% random guy on the internet. There are plenty of resources available. And I do know many people who have done this.

Mostly missionaries, but again check it.

They get the stamp - but is meaningless and does not bar them from future entry. An Ethiopian passport may be a different issue. But reentry on a new one wouldn't be especially a US one.

I am not an immigration expert by any means. However I had something similar.

What is usually the case is that you need to get documents legalized by your own embassy and by the Thai MFA.

You can Google 'legalizing' documents in Thailand to get more insights.

I would definitely not trust anyone who says yes no problem.

The main immigration office in Bangkok may be able to give you more helpful info or the Thailand MFA.

BreathtakingGoose8959 immigration won't do anything. The child is not currently in Thailand. It's all going to be down to the consulate that originally issued the DTV, they can't even apply for a new DTV under the new passport unless the old DTV is first cancelled and only the issuing consulate can do that
