Off to Savannakhet 7th October for my first single entry visa. I believe this is BOL establishment day public holiday in Laos. Will the border crossing be open? Can't find website to see their closure/opening days.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The border between Thailand and Laos will be open on the BOL establishment day public holiday, but the Thai consulate in Savannakhet may be closed. Travelers can still obtain a Laos visa at the border, and there are no requirements for proof of 20K baht when entering Laos.

If anyone wants a great tuktuk driver in savannakhet, then I highly recommend this guy. Fair pricing, reliable and friendly guy.

Okay, as far as the proof of 20K baht (or the equivalent) the thai consulate in Savannakhet will NOT accept you showing them 20K baht in cash. They only accept a bank statement.

AFAIK; not a single land border crossing between thailand and lao are asking for proof of 20K baht in funds when you stamp into the country.

Thanx for that update (y) So, it seems now all they care about is proof of funds for a tourist visa.

Just an update. Got to embassy at 7am no one there. 8:45am about 25 people. Was asked to show bank statement which I had photocopy of Thai bank book, asked for original to compare. Paid the visa fee and that was it. No question of onward travel or accommodation/itinerary.

hey Tod I've seen a few things online regarding a signed letter from bank manager to confirm funds along with the bank book of course. Can you confirm this is a necessary?

, like I said they started doing it back when tourist visas were free in late 2016-early 2017 and they've been doing it ever since. Google it, there're a TON of posts about it on the inter-web..

, it doesn't have to be a thai bank book, it can be a print out of the balance of your account in your country. But yes, you need a copy to turn in to them

Just so everyone's clear the borders don't close on holidays. The thai consulates in other countries usually close on thai holidays and holidays in the country they are in.
