So if I was to ship a large crate of personal belongings (family photos, mementos, etc.) would they get hit with import duties at BKK?
Answer summary
When shipping personal belongings to Bangkok, there is a high likelihood of incurring import duties. Variations in duties may depend on the value of shipped items, whether they are declared correctly, and if they are sent under a Thai national's name. Experiences shared by expats indicate that items like household goods often get through with minimal or no charges when declared as personal belongings, especially if sent in a Thai spouse's name. However, valuable items like electronics can attract higher duties. Proper paperwork, including listing contents and assigning low declared values, appears critical in minimizing customs fees.

Just a note to would be exporters of personal belongings.

My Thai wife canvassed social media to find a suitable import export agent of Thai origin here in Perth and many Thais who were or had moved back to Thailand recommended a couple of agents. She eventually chose the agent that had the best reviews to take care of things.

The recommended packing instructions were to list everything in each box and tape to the outside of each box, as well as printing a label with the wife’s name and shipping address in Thai language. If you have a number of boxes, make sure you number each one over the total number (ie.
****
,
****
, etc) and take photos to send to the shipping agent when booking pick up.

Our agent followed up with photos of boxes being unloaded at their depot, boxes being palletised and shrink wrapped and a copy of the shipping docket.

If you complete your International shipping paperwork out correctly, very little will be assessed customs import duties and taxes. The important thing is to declare "Personal Items not for Resale". You are moving here. And don't heap a lot of "declared value" on things just because they're valuable to you. It's not insurance.

Yes, most likely have to pay a small amount of tax, import duty...I shipped a few boxes of personal belongings, some of I already had in Thailand, as I returned to Thailand after covid, and had to pay import duties..if I had it in my luggage, no tax, through shipping, you pay tax, 99% for sure..1% you may get away with it

If shipping to Thailand, chances are good you'll get hit with import duty. How much will depend on what you are shipping and value. Those who say there was no import duty, chances are it was shipped in their Thai national spouse's name as personal belongings.

Doesn't matter what's inside as long as it's correctly declared and valued on the export ticket (from the origin country)

Thai customs are notorious for the bleed-the-farang scam. My son sent for a few packs of Lockets, mentholated sweets to cope with Bangkok pollution. The duties were more than 300% the cost of buying them.

I shipped 70kilos in and they asked for proof of visa ie that I live here full time. Their 1 st charge was 20,000 baht and was reduced to 4,000 baht as it was stuff I had left over from a container move here.

Yes you can certainly expect to. I've had to pay duty on merely paperwork that came through via UPS.

I've had a lot of problems with having tea sent from abroad. It's a different scope, but anything getting stuck at the customs center is a huge problem. You need to involve a Thai agent who is familiar with the paperwork; you can't just arrange for the transportation part and hope for the best when it arrives.

In my experience, yes. I shipped or sent some of my father’s paintings and sculptures a few years ago and they based the tariff on the shipping cost.

The shipping agent took care of everything for me. I shipped 25 boxes of personal effects and household goods, including kitchen equipment etc. I put a fairly low value on the forms for insurance etc. Nothing was opened and the customs charge was 6000 baht.

I didn’t, it was household goods in my wife’s name. We sent a pallet, 2.5 months later, 24 boxes were delivered to our door, none opened and no extra charges. Clothes, kitchen items, large pictures, hobby items.
