I'm curious - who does the work permit actually belong to - employee, employer or the Ministry of Labour?
My employers have always kept mine in the office but I'm getting bored of asking for it whenever I need it.
Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The work permit in Thailand is owned by the employee; it is issued in the employee's name and includes their photo. Although employers typically keep the original document in the office, employees have a right to access it whenever needed.
And, as another thread has discussed, there is a chance you may be asked to show it when re-entering Thailand, so it should certainly be carried when travelling.
It is applied for in employees name, it has the employees picture in it. It allows the employee to work at a described place and do the described job. And the employee signed the booklet when he/she picked it up at the Ministry of Labor. It is from the Employee, not from the company.
