What was the process and requirements for obtaining the DTV visa in Vietnam as a freelancer?

Just got my DTV approved in HCM, Vietnam.

Hi all, I applied as a Singaporean as a freelancer in HCM and got it approved in about 3 weeks total.

For context, I was rejected twice in Singapore for insufficient funds. First time was my fault- I was trying my luck by submitting my investment accounts (they’ve stated they wont accept that) and second time I got rejected because the *final ending balance* for one of my bank statements did not meet the minimum requirement.

I was advised to apply outside of Singapore. This is the timeline and documents I submitted:

27 Nov evening: submitted all documents- with 3 months of bank statements.

1 Dec: asked for further documents: all passport pages, document describing my self employment, portfolio and resume, and proof of qualifications. (I am an online fitness coach)

2 Dec evening: submitted further documents.

8 Dec evening: status changed on the website from “pending document check” to “pending approval”

12 Dec 5:50pm: received email of approval and PDF of visa.

Total working days: 11 days.

It was definitely a nerve wracking experience, but I’m so happy to finally have obtained it. The wait may have been long but it was worth it. For those applying in HCMC, please be patient! If you meet all the requirements there should be no issue.

Feel free to ask me any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Thank you for the write-up! Especially considering the multiple attempts in Singapore before finally being successful applying in Vietnam! A lesson to us all... Perhaps it's true that there's no reason to bother applying in Singapore -- haven't heard of many success stories there of late!

Btw how many days did it take for the rejections on your Singapore-based DTV attempts?

Anonymous participant 806 they were very fast to respond. 1-2 working days to request for more documents and for rejection 🫣

Thank You for your helpful report 👍

Congratulations 👏👏👏

PRINT OUT THE EMAIL THAT HAS YOUR DTV VISA.

That's what you should do... print it out.

You may have to show PROOF of your DTV Visa to airline staff on check-in for your flight ✈️ to Thailand...even to the connecting airline staff. Or to the land border crossing entry Thai Immigration Officer.

Upon arrival into Thailand, show the DTV visa to the Thai Immigration Officer and look at the STAMP placed in your passport to be sure you are STAMPED in for 180 days.

Did you pay 3 times?

CaptivatingPeapod7461 unfortunately yes. A very expensive lesson learned, thinking I could try my luck. I submitted the exact same bank statements that I did for Singapore and HCM. Singapore rejected me because my ending balance at the end of the month did not meet the financial requirement. HCM had no issue. Sometimes it’s not you, it’s the embassy.

Each time you apply the 10,000 Thai baht fee is still collected. No refunds.

So you travelled to Vietnam for three weeks to apply dtv?

Can I try DTV if Im unemployed for a month or is it just for free lancer only
Andi ***********
@PEm ************
If you are unemployed you can apply for the softpower option. If you are currently unemployed and due to start a new job soon then you can apply for the Workcation, it is not just for freelancers, anyone working remotely.

@Andi **********
I mean we can apply in cooking class but I heard we have to prove that we r remote worker or free lancer which I'm not,IV just resigned from my job n to apply for DTV we have to be one of that I'm confused
Andi ***********
@PEm ************
You do not have to prove a remote job to get a Softpower DTV. You need to show you can support yourself, having savings beyond the 500k THB helps.

tq hope it's true I'm still in doubt

You can find many posts by SPers not working. There are even retirees 60-75 who have the DTV doing Muay Thai, cooking or Medical option.

Well done. So you need to have the amount in cash savings? We have almost all invested, and even the cash element is in an investment account as cash. This can be an issue.

@J**
some consulates have no seasoning requirement, so you can move it into a bank account just before applying.

I'll check the embassy when I'm back in blighty.

What is your passport nation ?

Where will you be applying for the DTV visa? Which Embassy or Consulate website? Using the Evisa online application system.

Which purpose for the DTV visa will you be applying for?

Workcation DTV or Soft Power activity?
Jay *********
@James *******
UK Passport, will apply from London, so London Embassy. Purpose will be soft power. I always intended to learn Thai, regardless of it being an option here, my wife wants to learn the language but also loves cooking and may choose one of them. I did see that doing nature seminars is available in Bangkok, but I am in CM and it looks like a riskier one to get.

the UK Thai Embassy is good for the issue of the DTV visa.

Thai language study is 🚫 NOT eligible for the DTV visa.

The choice of the sponsor for the DTV course of study is very important. Be sure to ask them about their success in getting the DTV visa with their course.

AND be sure the CV course is at minimum of 6 months or more as we are seeing reports of DENIED DTV visa or issued a SETV single entry tourist visa instead of the DTV Visa. Thinking that one entering Thailand with the SETV single entry tourist visa has 90 days STAMP AND has time to do a course of study of 3 months or less.

Also have seen the issue of the METV multiple entry tourist visa instead of the DTV visa when the course is 6 months or less.

The METV multiple entry tourist visa grants you 6 months of stay in Thailand.

you are in luck, London has no seasoning requirement. They want three months bank statements to show income but require £11,000 (500k THB) only at the end, not for the duration. I got my DTV there and only had the full amount at the end of the period I sent them.

@Ivan ***********
excellent Thanks Ivan. . Only complication now is showing income. I earn a salary of £5K and top up with selling shares or removing cash reserves from the investment account £30K.
Ivan ************
@J**
there's no explicit minimum salary, people have been approved with very little. The 500k deposit is the only bit that is non-negotiable.

@Jay ********
Yes, needs to be in a personal instant accessible bank account.
