TLDR : Answer Summary
To marry a Thai girlfriend in Thailand, you do not need a specific visa. You can enter on any visa or even a visa-exempt entry. However, you will need to obtain an affidavit of freedom to marry from your consulate in Thailand and have it translated and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Then, you and your partner can register your marriage at an Amphur Office. The entire process can typically be completed in a few days.

In sweden it only took 2 days to get my documents and when I got back after getting back from Thailand it only took 4 days to have it registered in Sweden 😁

Yes, I have to wait 6 months for the documents from my country too! Just another 3 months, I hope...

Yes, I have the divorce documents from the court, but apparently I need a letter of no impediment which I applied for from my embassy in Bangkok.

The only issue I faced getting married in Thailand was the immigration process to bring my wife back to my home country. If we just stayed engaged, the immigration process would have been easier. Because I got married in Thailand, I had to submit tons of documentation from her friends and family here to prove that our marriage was real. That turned out to be a major headache as we needed every paper translated and so forth and so on. Not sure where you are from, but of you are planning on bringing your spouse to your country, you may want to check on the process in your home country. Just an fyi

Yep.. much easier to do the fiance route for US then to do a marriage visa.

After getting married you may need to apply for Going Out with Friends visa. These are available from most Thai wife’s however can be quiet expensive and need to be applied for in advance as thai marriage comes with a non-GOF visa initially. Over time you may even qualify for a multi GOF visa. There are very strict rules on these though regarding over stays and under no circumstance should you enter a foreign port on a GOF visa.

okay, to get married in thailand you can come in on any visa or even a visa exempt entry. You're going to need to get an affidavit of freedom to marry from your consulate once you're here, then get that translated into thai along with the data page of your passport and get those translations certified as accurate by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office here.

THEN you and your thai bride to be go to an Amphur Office (like a city hall) and register your marriage.

This is how you get your affidavit of freedom to marry if you are a brit here:

some Amphurs offer the translation and certification by the MFA for an added fee. This service is worth the 1500 baht I paid for it. We went into the Amphur, met with the woman who handles marriages, she reviewed the paper work and told us to come back in 2 days. When we came back all the paperwork was drawn up, we signed and thats it..

You can turn up in the country on any visa or visa exempt, get the freedom to marry paper from your Embassy, have your passport translated and certified from the MFA, then turn up at your local Amphur and get hitched.. all can be done in less than a week (took me 3 days).
