TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen moving to Thailand for a job will typically need to obtain a Non-Immigrant B visa, which should be arranged by the employer. The employer is responsible for providing the necessary documents for the visa and work permit. If the visa is not secured before arrival, the individual may receive a 30-day entry stamp. Regarding travel tickets, while opinions vary, many users suggest that a roundtrip ticket may not be necessary if you have the work visa sorted beforehand.

I can relate to that

Strange that your new job didn't tell you anything about the visa arrangements? If your new job is a Thai government, private or language school then don't count on actually having a job let alone a visa, they're all very good at offering jobs to people overseas but there word usually means very little..

Your new company should do it for you as well as giving you instructions on what paperwork you need & how to proceed. Best!

Make the round trip portion a date that you could visit home, if you wanted, like vacation or term break.

Or a one way award is fine!

. That might not even be enough. Many airlines want to see proof of you leaving the country within the validity of your visa, especially if you're flying out of Heathrow.

Agree, 1 way only if you have your business visa sorted before you leave.

Depends on the airline. From the UK it's virtually impossible to fly without proof of onward travel or a return ticket within the validity of your visa.

You'll need documents from your employer to apply for a non imm B visa in the US. When you enter Thailand you'll need docs from your employer to apply for your work permit and 1 year extention of stay.

Your company should sort it out, you should be able to get it at an embassy in the states before coming over. If your coming over before you have the visa you will get a 30 day entry stamp. Shouldn't need a round trip ticket.

Better is to let your company organize all the paperworks before you step on the plane, let them send it to you and apply for a Non Immigrant B visa at Consulate or Embassy in the US.

Your Company will need to sort out your Work Visa...on a passport from the USA you get a 30 day Visa Exempt waiver to arrive then your company will need to do the rest of the Work visa paperwork for you in order to stay in Thailand for the year....Good Luck
