TLDR : Answer Summary
A father of a Thai child can obtain a visa after being legally recognized as the father. This can occur through a legal marriage or court recognition. If recognized, there are two visa options: a 60-day extension of stay for visiting Thai family, which does not require financial proof, or a one-year extension of stay based on raising a half-Thai child, which does require proof of 400,000 THB in savings or a monthly income of 40,000 THB. Documentation requirements may vary by immigration office.

Congratulations on the birth of your child.

>my question is what type of visa can i obtain having a thai child?

As of right now, none, sadly :( You need to be recognized as the legal father. This can happen automatically through legal marriage, or through the courts. If there is no dispute (which I can't imagine there is!), then you'll be granted parental rights.

>How long will it last?

IF you are granted parental rights, you have two options:

a. An 60 day extension of stay based on visiting Thai family. This does *NOT* require 400K THB in a savings account/ 40K THB a month of income.

b. A one year extension of stay based on raising half-Thai child. This does require 400K THB in a savings account, or 40K THB a month in income.

> what kind of documentation / requirements should I have

Depends on the immigration office. I recommend getting parental rights first, and then get the extension of stay after.

I am doing a child visa in CM now. I’m not married to the mother.

I did not have to get the court paper.

I just had to go to government building and get a letter that I take care of my son. That’s if your name is on the birth certificate.

Needed to bring 2 witnesses with me and the mom and child.

And of course a resident letter.

Going Thursday to immigration to complete the visa.

how OLD was your child when you went to the Amphur and got the legalization of parental rights from them?

My son was 5 years old when I did it.

They like them to be 7 years old and up but there is no actual law stating age.Just the amphur officer's opinion.

They let my son do it because he could clearly answer questions and understand what he was being asked and he could write his full name in Thai to sign his name.

If the child can't do either, they will not issue the document.

yep, totally an arbitrary Amphur by Amphur decision on the age of the child for sure :O :/

Yes I don't think that will help you for the year extension.

That’s what immigration told me. I’ll find out soon.

you will need the court paper to do the annual extension of stay though once the visa finishes

You don't need to be the legal father to obtain a 60 day family visit extension.

@Barde******
first things first, you need to get the 60 day visit thai family extension so you get OFF amnesty :)
